                        How many reference books does everyone own?

                        I was curious about how many modeling/reference books everyone owns. I have over 1,300 books of various military and civilian subjects of all kinds, plus my collection of all of the FSM issues published.

                        I wonder what is typical for the average modeler - I imagine many people have lots of info on certain subjects that they are most interested in.

                        Perhaps you should add a choice or two in addition to "Less than 100!"

                        I couldn't vote. The only question is "less than 500" Although my count less than 500, the correct answer is between 100-150. It is made of mostly modern reference material as WW2 material is always easier to buy.

                        Something definitely wrong with the Poll software. Anyway, I don't have an actual count of reference books, but it's around 200, not counting the several hundred magazines. Storage is becoming a real issue, especially the mags, but I just can't part with them.

                        I hope FSM gets this "poll glitch" fixed some time soon...

                        Paul, FSM better count...I use them as reference books!

                        Anyway, I have about 40 general WWII history books, around 10 specific unit histories for WWII, something like 50 vehicle "walk-around" type reference books, and then a bunch (over 100) of magazines or "magazine like" books that I consider vital reference materials. By far the most important of these books are about 5 or the WWII history books and then the Concord Publications line of pictorial histories.

                        I've got a couple of dozen reference books, but they are more the product of my obsession with airplanes than they are modeling references. Right now I'm starting work on a computerized reference library of net photos and so forth 'cause I hate moving books every so often and I don't have a whole room to store them in. Plus the local libray has quite a few books.

                        Do magazines count? Realistically, I have only a handful. Only recently I've wanted to start collecting, since only recently is it that I've gotten interested in scratch-detailing my projects. It's usually very difficult for me to justify the price of a book, since I'm not out to build the most accurate model possible. Most of my builds are OOB, thus eliminating the need for masses of reference material.

                        At last count...

                        about 450 aircraft books
                        about 500 ship books
                        about 200 armor books
                        4300 ship photos
                        35 sets of ship plans
                        128 warship design sheets (camo pattern sheets)
                        30-40 general military history books, uniforms, battles, etc .

                        I'm not counting magazines...have Airpower, Air Classics and Naval History going back in to the 1970s, and FSM from about 1989 onwards.

                        ...any and every "How To........." book on plastic scale modelling...........since the early 80's......'til recently, every FSM......supplemented by samplings of some "other" scale modelling mags...........
                        and easily over 500 hard cover books on specific subjects........
                        i like the net for references but, ain't nutt'in like hav'in 4 or 5 books all open simultaneously to a current project(s)............

                        Probably between 200 and 250, if you count FSM. I'm guessing well over 1000 photos too, mostly digi pics.

                        Since I am a bibliophile and books are my greatest weakness, I lost count........ my library of medieval subject matter is better than most college libraries and includes some medieval manuscripts and codices. Other subjects I'm interested in include several books, often too numerous to count. Since the US library system is terrible in general since the early 70's and even through inter library loan it still is pretty pitiful I have enjoyed the selfish pleasure of collecting books on subjects interesting me.

                        I have between 80 -100 Not counting Wings, Air Power, Avation History, Air Progress (Am I leaving any out?) magazines. Plus a boat load of reference photos I've shot at various airshows.
