I don't consider my model planes as toys so I don't play with them....but I do make a lot of imaginary flying and combat in between modeling Smile [:)]

i play with the uncompleted models, but the completed models are too fragile. i use full sound effects, and i sometimes have epic battles with 2 models. i once glued a piece of sprue to a micro machine F-4 and a Mig-15. boy the dogfights i had........ Smile [:)]

unfortunately i lost them somehow and i never got down to making another pair of dogfighters Sad [:(]

I'm not a sound effects kinda guy - but I do fiddle with them - positioning them differently on the shelf , picking them up and looking at them from different angles, alternately displaying the Corsair with Folded or extended wings. (I just folded them anhour or so ago) This is done quite often during the build process too.

And for the ceiling hangers I have a rig where I can actually determine the position of the plane in all three axes. It's pretty neat - and it satisfies my desire to change the way they are displayed just about every time I enter the room.

The most I do is set up a couple fans in front of a model with free wheeling props and watch those suckers pinwheel! It's pretty fun, especially with my current project (see sig.). It's got eight of them!

I've been known to do a little 'sandbox manuevers' with my Armor, as well as take a couple model aircraft for a 'test flight' while building them. Sometimes, I've done this when I take them down or put them back up again after IPMS meetings.

In the days of my youth, I used to 'wargame' my collection against the collections of a couple other friends. We used dice and D&D hit tables modified to reflect damage to equipment. Of course we also had to make up a few rules to balance things since we were sending WWII stuff against modern stuff. Ahh, the good old days...... Wink [;)]

I don't play with my Kits, but just ask my Wife on how much time I spend on positioning them on a Dio to get the look just right.

I will admit to nothing but sometimes humming or whistling appropriate to the piece I'm working on. Don't ask me why but if I'm working on a german piece of armor, I constantly hum or whistle to myself the panzermarche or aircraft the into the wild blue yonder, the confederate navy vignette I hummed dixie, etc....

do i play with those plastic and glue blobs that are created with my fingers? do i make engine sounds and take offs and landings? do i imagine myself flying into a formation of japanese/german/italian/american a/c with the guns of my trusty bird blazing?

no i do not. i do not play with these little replicas of birds of so long ago. and of course i dont play with army men, video games, mud, finger paints, or anything such as that. at least when my children are around.

Oh absolutely, in fact, my Panther and T-34 have a turf war waging over my build table. I figure I should get all my "playing" done with before they are done while I still feel like correcting anything I might screw up, such as a ring under the turret from turning it to fast to bring it to bear on the enemy Wink [;)]

. I just have to be careful not to take it to far and pretend my fingers are shells and do some real damage Big Smile [:D]

when I was kid I did all of the above... now I tend to either:

1. once I have the wings on and painted waiting for the gear to be placed... find myself eyeballing down the fuselage banking the model etc... wondering how graceful it was... what it sounded like (found a great site with movies of restored planes from WWII taking off and flying... it's an awesome sound!!!) what it felt like in a bank or whatever... the blood rushing into your head... the vision narrowing with the G's etc...

2. stare up at the one or two I decided to build with gear up, hanging from the ceiling... when the AC or heater comes on they move just the slightest and if you squint your eyes just right you can imagine them in flight... my fav's are a P-51 in O.D. and a F8F both in formation together....

So me! I had a blast with all the Monogram kits that my friend and I built. We rarely had the same kit too! Remember the SBD with the bomb release? The Avenger with the torpedo release? They all did cool things. Anyway today, yah I make terrible machine-gun noises and cannon firings. I don't drive them in the dirt anymore. Big Smile [:D]

I have been known to hold the model in the first person perspective and give a VROOM or Boom Boom now and then. It's like an overwhelming urge that comes over me. Never grew up and probabbly never will.

Well i guess that imagination is a big part of modeling for most of us, but like most of you i don't touch them after iv'e finished them but i do find myself looking at them in the cabinet for long periods of time imagining what it would have been like to strap myself into the pit and fly it, but they don't come out of the cabinet unless i'm going to do some more work on it mainly because i don't want any accidents to happen.....Jules....

Usually not with the finished ones, but when I'm building them (especially hypothetical ones) I'm always playing around with them in the construction phase. You know that "What would it look like if I did this?" phase.

For me, the building and painting part IS the playtime that I get with a model. Once it's done, it sits there for my viewing pleasure and little else.

Every so often I' ll catch myself doing an approach with a partially completed airplane. When I was in grade school I built a USS Forrestal that amused me for hours as I launched countless Alpha Strikes from it's deck. Eventually, I glued down the planes.

Remember the SBD, Hellcat, spitfire and hurricane with retractable gear from Monogram? I fought the Battle of Britain, Midway and a few others over and over again!
