Take action against kit Licensing!
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, February 5, 2005 7:57 AM
Hey All,

I know that there are a few threads going on about this, but since this is about something a little different, I wanted to start a new one.

The fact that there is even a licensing issue blows my mind. I can't believe that we've gotten to the point that it is even considered, none the less becoming a real problem. I really wanted to do something about it. Seeing everyone disgust made me realize I wasn't alone and that this issue shouldn't be ignored or be forgotten about. I thought it would be a good Idea to have a place people could go where they could keep updated, share the letters they wrote and find out what else they coud do.

I decided that a website that had everything in one place would be a good idea. That way, you could send your parents, friends, relatives or whoever to it, have them find out more and download letter templates that they can add their names to and send off.

This is where you guys come in. If you are interested in contributing a letter, link to something about the subject, editorial or idea, I'd like to hear from you. I'm just developing it right now and hope to have it live in the next week. The URL is http://www.saveourmodels.com . Right now, it's password protected, but if you use the username: model and the password: maker, you can see everything. I just didn't want to open it completely to the public until it is done.

Anyhow, if you have anything you'd like to contribute, please let me know and I'll put it up on the site.

~ Thanks

Garth, thanks very much. I'd think a large petition sent to Congress might have some effect.

Garth,

Here's another article for your site. It's the editorial from the January 05 Internet Modeler Webzine:

Hope this helps...

Foster7155, thanks for the link to the article. I'll email them today to see if it is ok to add it to the page.

Dave, that is a great idea for the petition. I hadn't even thought of that. I'll create an online petition and try to get as many signatures as possible. Great idea, thanks!

If you've gotten a chance to check out the site, does it look ok? I know that it might be hard to tell because I am still building it, but it doesn't look too shoddy, does it?

Thanks again guys

The site looks good. If you can help link each reader to their own representative, more letters could be generated that way. I've seen this done on other websites. I think it was also done with Tom Cleaver's original articles about kit licensing problems.

Hey Everyone, the site is live! Go to http://www.saveourmodels.com and check it out. Let me know if there is anything you would like me to add or change about the site or if you run into any difficulties. I am going to be adding more content over the next week, but I wanted to get everything up and running. I am waiting for a response on permission to post a few articles, so they may be coming soon.

Unrelated to this subject, I've recently heard & read a few news stories where contacting your representatives in Congress (both Senate & House) can sometimes have more of an affect than you might think. One story was basically saying that on some issues, they'll receive only a handful of comments. So you basically have a few people who may influence a representative's decision.

To put it simply... write, phone, email your representatives in Congress and let your voice be heard on whatever issue. How else can they represent you if you never contact them?

but what if you're not american? who can you write to in order to protest?
I know for sure that writing to dutch MP's (I live in the netherlands) won't change a thing about US licensing laws. But it will effect plastic modelers all over the world!

Dave,

Your point is actually very related to this subject. It's important to be involved in government, not just by voting, but also by writing to your representatives.
