Hey Murray,
Don't have a Canon, but a Sony. It works great for the original purpose I bought it and it has definately paid for itself but the focal length is insufficient for really tight closeups. In all honesty, if you are going to buy a camera with model shots in mind, grab one and take it to the store and see how much detail you can shoot of it. Or put your car keys up on the counter and shoot (or at least focus on the detail) those. Otherwise you won't be happy. Since most of the market is geared towards folks shooting their vacation shots with it, alot of the cameras do not have the focal length for micro work. Be sure and keep in mind what you want to do with it.
Good luck
Mike
