ScaleFest shopping
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, April 28, 2005 3:25 PM
i posted this in the aircraft section but no replies; maybe someething will pop up here: FYI this will be held in mesquite tx on may 21.

hi, from previous posts, i am recently re-entering the world of plastic modeling. i picked up a flyer at my LHS the other day and there will be a modeling competition / show coming to my area in may (21). I believe it is called Scale-Fest.

of course i'm going to see all the works that others have done but also interested in vendors / shopping. i've never been to one of these so wondering if there is a big vendor turnout and if you can usually get just about anything you need / want there? tools , supplies, kits? also, how about the pricing? i definitely prefer to buy most of my stuff from my LHS (have a couple good ones near my place) but they do not have some of the more exotic stuff / tools. plus, seems like a good time / place to stock up (leave the wife at home).

can someone give me an idea of what to expect and should i hold off mail ordering stuff and buy at the show or will it be a hit and miss type of thing. i'm not expecting rock bottom prices, but am looking for a LARGE selection and decent / competitive prices.

Gary............it's the BEST regional show (Region VI, i believe) held in the country..........imo
hold off mailordering 'til you've spent the two days at this show...........i'd be surprised if you'll be disappointed.........
it used to be run by Penny & Lee Thomas..........and if it still is.....again, it IS the BEST...........
my affiliation was through Phil's Hobbies (sadly now defunct) where i "worked" for nye on 6 years and had the ultimate pleasure of representing Phil's at 6 of these incredible events............
for quite awhile now, it's been Squardron ScaleFest and for this one weekend Squadron opens their doors to their warehouse and if i'm not mistaken, they sell there as well as having an enormous vendor table at the show.................
so, that i won't go on and on and on and on and on.............drop me an e-mail if you've a mind ta and i'd be happy to ramble on for hours about this most wonderous of scale modelling events..............
many many old friends still attend................were i to be geographically closer, i'd see ya there..........
in days gone by.......Monogram/Revell, KMC, Engines & Things, Badger, Tamiya, AeroMaster, Cutting Edge, Hasegawa, Academy, Accu.Min......etc......etc.......etc........would almost always be in attendance...............
enjoy........wish i could be there............

cirikili, thanks for the info. i have probably talked to you in the past if you worked at Phil's hobbies. in fact, i have just completed a couple models i bought from there in 2001 and have a couple more on the bench. that was a great hobby store. was sad to hear they are no longer have the store.

really looking forward to the show and especially shopping for items that are not readily available locally. i hope cameras are allowed. i'm sure there will be some cream de la cream models on display.

tho9900, come on down. if you got a motorcycle, i'll show you some decent roads just north of here; never mind - scratch that idea, you'll need a truck or van to carry all your purchases back home.

I won't know anyone there. But I'll be there if it kills me! Scalefest is one of the highlights of my year. One of these years, I'm going to make it to the nationals'. Can't wait!!! grapeape
