Primer for resin?
Posted by Aviator on Thursday, May 19, 2005 3:21 PM
I'm not sure where this would go, but I'll try it here. I have heard that you should use some kind of primer on resin before you begin painting. My question is, will any primer work or are some specifically made for priming resin? I have also heard that enamel tends to work better. What would you recommend?

One thing for sure is that you should wash your resin parts in hot water and a degreaser-like Dawn.

I believe Tamiya makes a specialty resin primer but I use "Color Place"-Equipment Gray Primer from Walmart. Cheap, only 97 cents, and it has never let me down. What ever you use be sure to wash off your castings with warm soapy water so you won't get the dreaded fish eye effect. Here is my freshly primed starship using said primer.

I always clean & prime resin before painting. I prefer Floquil grey primer applied with an AB.

I rinse the resin parts in warm, soapy water and then use Tamiya primer. It hasn't let me down.

Well, the only two resin ship kits I've built to date have been washed in warm water and dish detergent and then primed with Model Master gray primer out of the spray can, and no problems with mold release or anything else, thank God.

What makes the primer special? Is it something different than paint or is it just plain old gray paint? Now that I have some resin parts, I have been thinking about this.

Honestly, I have no idea ... that's for the paint gurus in here. I just read in here that it's always a good idea to prime the model first, both to spot surface imperfections and to help the actual color coats stick better.

The only time I use a primer on resin is when the top color is white. For some reason white will not stick to resin unless it is primed first. Other times I just clean and paint and haven't had any problem. The trick is to make sure it is very clean prior to painting.
