Productive Weekend Part Three-Lots of Pics
Posted by Duke Maddog on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 11:26 PM
Here we are in Part Three of my Wondrous Weekend building spree! This part focuses mainly on the work I did on the C119 Boxcar I've been working on

I took some time to hinge my Testor's 1/72 scale C119 clamshell doors so I could display them either open or closed as I choose. Here they are closed:

And here they are opened:

You can see the copper wire and brass rod I used to make the hinges. It isn't accurate, but it is functional! I also need to touch up the inside of the doors to get rid of the white paint that seeped through.

Meanwhile, one of the propellers had broken off, and wouldn't glue back on.

So I got down with it and pulled out the Big Guns.

First, I drilled a pinhole in the shaft on the cowling:

Then did the same with the propeller:

Then I cut a piece of copper wire:

(I used a slightly thicker piece than the one shown. Don't know how that one got in the picture! Blush [:I]) I then CA glued the copper piece into the cowling shaft, measured the depth of the hole I drilled in the propeller, and cut the wire to size. Then I CA glued the propeller onto the copper wire sticking out. Voila! A fully repaired, (and spinning) propeller!

Instead of just showing the propeller, here's a pic of the whole plane as it looks fully put together:

Of course, the canopy/windscreen needs to be installed; and what doesn't show is that the propeller cowlings, the wings, and the fuselage are not cemented together. They are all just test-fit together so you can see what I've managed to finish so far. I have the nose sanded and ready to be painted red.

There's still a little more to show, so tune in to Part Four!

Great looking model so far! Did you scatch build the interior? My dad used to fly this plane and I've wanted to do one. How's the fit? Is this the Testors kit?

Thanks for sharing

Great work! The hinged doors are a nice touch.

Thanks everyone!

Yeah, jinithith, sometimes it takes a bit of time for replies, but there were a lot of views. Thanks for stopping in and checking this out.

Neil, Thanks. Yes, this is the Testor's kit. The interior is built OOB. I didn't have to scratch it, it was part of the kit. The fit was pretty good, except for the two booms attached to the wing. The fit is a little off, but nothing that a little sanding can't fix. The two main fuselage halves didn't fit well on the bottom, but I think that was because of the amount of weights in the nose. Once you assemble the propellers in the cowlings, be sure to leave them off the plane until you have finally finished the model. That way they won't break off during any other assembly and decaling.

Thanks Tango, I figured if the interior was gonna be in there, I should at least have the option of opening it up occasionally.

Thanks again for checking it out.
