Model storage
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 25, 2003 9:33 PM
Heyoh,
As a matter of interest how do most people store/display thier finished works? To be quite honest I build to build not to replicate (not that there's anything wrong with wanting to build a representation of a favoured subject) and find my greatest enjoyment in the hobby is when I'm looking for a solution to a problem or trying out a new technique. To quote a quote from FSM "favourite model = the next one". Usually when I've finished a project I lose interest in it and it ends up on my shelf in the hobby room; needles to say my hobby room is getting quite crowded. I've thought about putting older models in to box's with that styrafoam popcorn but somehow this seems sacriligious. You spend 5 to 6 months building something (I'm a father of 2 young children) only to hide it away. So, what do most of you do when your corner is getting crowded?

Hand them down to my sons is a great way of making way for the next piece of art. What's left of the good ones is stored on my bookcase. Problem is there isn't much room left on it, so I'm thinking of putting some inexpensive shelves up in my hoobyroom. Iv'e also thought about posting this topic before.

I'ld hand them down to my son (if he wasn't 6 days old ) and my daughter thinks there cool but I've seen what she does to her Barbies!!!!!! As for shelving, I don't think there's anymore room/height. My problem is I'm too much of a pack rat and I can't bare to get rid of anything...."it'll come in handy one day Honey..."

It sounds like you need a glass display cabinet for Christmas!, better than shelves as it will keep the dust off the models. Failing that, Put some of your models into boxes (there's another string on here somewhere with some great idea's for that) and leave them there for a few month's. Every so often, bring one or two out & redisplay them. That way you don't get bored with what's on the shelf & you get a new display for visitors (look on it as a shop window). Also, you may find that your older stuff is not quite as good as your latest model, It's great to see how your skill's develop without your realising it.

I display my finished models on shelves in the hobby room. Some are in plexiglass display cases, others sit in the open on the shelf. I also have a few models on display at a hobby store.

Mine take 'tours of duty'. They used to all live in my display cabinet, but when it got too crowded I installed some nice looking shelves and rotate the models around every month or so. That way they all get the same exposure to dust and grime out in the shelves. What will happen when I can't fit them all in the shelves and the cabinet? I dunno...

Check the local high school, many Social Science teachers display a/c and other military models in their room. Now I realize this isn't the ideal place, but for models you aren't in love with it is a great place for them to go. One of my friends a World History teacher who I have given several planes to, now has his class build models once a year and he has me come in to talk to the students on building technique and model selection. It is quite fun and you are giving something back to the community.
