Reliving the "early years"
Posted by styrene on Thursday, June 26, 2003 10:57 AM
Was just wondering:
Has anyone ever reverted to childhood modeling, and just for the sheer enjoyment (and stress relief), thrown a kit together in an hour or so--just like you did when you were a kid?
I tried this not long ago. Found an old jet kit that I gave a couple bucks for. Tore open the package and started pulling stuff off the sprue trees (I did cut a few of the parts that were delicate or firmly attached). Then without painting, sanding, trimming, filling, etc. , and glued all the parts together. I even left the landing gear off, but glued the doors closed. Found some brown paint in a spray can, shot the whole model, then glued the canopy on. When dry, gave it to my son to play with/destroy, etc. He was elated. I had parts left over, glue smears here and there--the whole works.
Found it to be great therapy. Was just wondering if I'm the only crazy one out there? Tongue [:P]

Yep, saw it painted on the building wall, "Gip is crazy"

Whatever it takes to make it fun.

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

I myself have never done that but there is a guy who goes by the moniker of "Bob the Modeler" who apparently has, and tries to hawk them on ebay.

I' m building an esci/ertl x-wing for my nephew. It will be the first kit I've built where I haven't done research, bought p/e or resin sets. He's very excited about it being finished and I'm happy to do it for him.

I threw a crashed mustang together recently to finish off a more carefully built Airfix emergency set diorama, kit was a badly started matchbox P51D and got finished in an evening, including building, painting, decals and setting fire to it !
that evenings modeling was real fun......Smile [:)].......sad really !

Not quite. I bult a Tamiya's Bren-Gun Carrier for my son right out of the box. He insisted that it looked fresh out of the factory. I said thank you. The finished product looked like some of my earlier efforts, straight out of the factory new. The fact that we didn't go crazy on weathering made it an enjoyable build for us.
