Anyone else had this luck with Great Models?
Posted by Aviator on Monday, July 11, 2005 9:32 PM
In early June, I placed an order at Great Models and am still waiting for it.Angry [:(!] There are only two items on the order and they're out of one. And since they don't ship until the order is 80% full, I may have to pay multiple shipping charges sometimes. I'm not really in a hurry to get the stuff, but I'm getting tired of waiting. Has anyone else had this kind of luck with Great Models?

Love'em. I have had great luck with them, just watch out for some that are not released yet or out of production kits.

I still swear by Squadron.com. I may end up paying $1 or 2 more than at Great Models but at least I will get the item soon after I place the order and pay only one shipping charge.

My gripe with GM is that even if the site says "in stock" that does not mean they have it actually on hand.

I had this happen to me, ended up waiting far longer for some PE because I didn't meet the $10 minimum because the rest of the order was out of stock. I called them and told them I really needed my PE set, and to cancel the rest of the order and waive the $10 min. They did it and I had my PE within 2 days.

So give them a call.

I use greatmodels a lot, I have had a detail set for a Zero on back order for a year! the model has long since been built. On some things they are great, but on others they suck.

I always have good service with them. I ordered a "special order" and it came into stock after about a month. Usually it takes longer. Just be paitient.

Hmmm, so its not just me. I placed an order with them 10days ago, and it stil hasn't shown. If it was squadron, it would have been here a long time ago.

Hmmm. Ok, thanks for your help. I'm not in a big hurry, so I'll just give it some more time and maybe it will ship before I need it. Sigh [sigh]

Mostly I've had very positive experiences with GMW, however the only thing that you need to keep in mind is that if an item is not listed as "In Stock", do not order it unless you are prepared to wait possibly for a loooooooooooong time.

I got the stuff today. A set of decals and an engine for my F4F, all in a tiny box. Hopefully this won't happen again.

A word of advice ... don't believe what they tell you on the phone either. I ordered some PE sets from the last Wednesday. The girl said they were both in stock and would ship "Tomorrow" (07/14). I called today to see where my parts were and the girl said that, "They should be in tomorrow and should ship Friday." When I said that they were in stock a week ago and were supposed to ship on the 14th her comment was that someone must have made a mistake. Yep, the person who made the mistake was me. First and last time they get my business.

I've had great luck with Great Models. None of my specials orders took more than 3 weeks.

If you want to talk about slow service try Roll Models. Two months for something they had in stock.

I've ordered some Gunze goodies from Roll Models and it took 1.5 months. Probelm was I only got half of the order. They didn't email me before it shipped to say some items were on backorder. Same with GM- They would benefit greatly from a better program that keeps up with a customer order. Squadron is my choice! Always get everything I order or Macky Sue emails me back and asks if there is something else they can fill the order with. Now that is service.

I have had bad luck with them most the time. Ordered black paint they said they had in stock gave up waiting after two weeks did the same thing with a bottle of white paint and a tank. I only order from them now for stuff that I can not get from Squadron like armorman Squadron is my choice.

I completely agree, Squadron is my #1 choice but they were out of what I needed whereas Great Models said they had them in stock. We learn from our mistakes. Next time I'll stick with someone I know and trust. I have ALWAYS had absolute first rate service from Squadron. I'm sure many people have had excellent service from GM, and I'm sure there are some who have had poor service from Squadron. Companies only get one chance to mess up an order for me and this was GM's chance. Never again.

I've ordered from them multiple times, only once did I have an experience which sortof raised my eyebrows, but at that it still wasn't a killer. Squadron may indeed be faster, but I don't model at warp factor 9 anyway, so it's rarely an issue.

I'd order from GM again.

Hey guys, while were on the subject of GM, I ordered the new Dragon late 3 in 1 on 7/29/05
and they said that it would be in stock on the 8th of August, now it is saying Searching For / Taking Pre-Orders, is this normal?

Anyway, just wondering.

Their site is pretty badly made, I think you'd actually need to talk to them as the web site seems to have been constructed by children, lol

I'm thinking about ordering some kits online through Great Models or Squadron. Seems some of you have had some bad experiences with GM and I don't want to repeat your problems. However model to model GM seems less expensive than Squadron, and many of the kits I'm looking at are on sale at GM.

Anybody with horror stories shipping to Canada?

So long folks!

I've never had problems with either of them shipping to Canada though I find Squadron is quite a bit faster. Don't know why that is. As long as you stick with USPS as your shipping option, you'll be fine. If you choose UPS or FedEx, you'll get hit by their brokerage fee.

Thanks! Once I get my wish list down to a size I can afford, I'll give Great Models a shot.

bstrump, I'm an old Nanaimo boy (1967 to 1985), how's life on the big island? Thanks for the clue about USPS, my experiences with UPS have been uniformly bad.

So long folks!

I've made a lot of orders through Great Models, and I havent had a single problem yet. I live in western Canada and I havent had any shipping problems either, usually seems to take a week and a half to 2 weeks for my orders to arrive.

I had one problem with my first order with GM and, like a few other here, that was enough. The service with Squadron has always been top notch. I also order a lot from Tower Hobbies. The selection isn't as broad as Squadron, but they prices are usually a little better, and they have the same great service. Either are highly recommended!

I have one order, which has been screwed up no end, ordered over a week ago, paid at time of order, and I have no idea if it's shipped, The last email I had from them said "we will ship your order as soon as possible" wtf does that mean? It's not a huge dollar order, so I have ordered the same items from Squadron, a little more money, but I live in hope that two companies can't be equally as bad as greatmodels, what a sham!
With so many online companies doing business these days, there is no room for error, or incompetance sorry if that sounds harsh, but the battle for your dollars is a hard fought battle. Greatmodels, IMHO, are not crooks or sharlatans, but simply ill equppied to deal with the volume that they see, this causes issues such as mine, which means I don't buy from them again and spread my experiance on the net! It's a cruel existance, I live by it with my own business, people expect and deserve the very finest customer experiance when shopping online as there is no person to person relationship. When you get it wrong, it's remembered for a very long time.

Vapochilled, I don't disagree with your sentiments. I am willing to give GM one chance as the sale they currently have will allow me to buy almost 2-3 more kits than I could sneak past the wife afford from Squadron. I could order from Udisco, but the same rational applies. I can get more bang for my buck at Great Models.

'Course if they burn me, they burn the bridge to me!

So long folks!
