Your significant other
Posted by qmiester on Sunday, July 17, 2005 11:00 AM
This is for those of you here who have a "better half" (wife/husband) with whom you reside with. I was just reading a thread in which a gentleman was proudly showing off (as he should) his wifes current project. I got to wondering how many people here have a significant other (Ok, not just married folks but those of you who have a girlfriend or boyfriend too) who actively participate in this hobby. I know there are a significant number of couples who participate in model railroading but what about plastic modeling?
My bride of 35 1/2 yrs has actively supported me in my hobbies since we were first married (although there have been some rough times early on). She's built a few models (a couple of cars and two or three planes). She really prefers Gardening and Crafts. (Although if I wander in with an N scale wooden Craftsmen kit for the little N scale layout I piddle with, she'll snag that sucker in an instant and build it). We help each other in our hobbies (Honey, will you hold this in place while I do that?), even sharing tools (hey, in our place, I'm 90% more likely to lose something than she is). Anyway, does your significant other A. actively participate B. actively support your hobby, C. think you're weirder than a 2 headed frog, or D. just ignore you hoping its a passing phase?

Hey Q! Here's a post I made in another thread:
Both my ex-wives and even my wonderful mother never understood my passion for models. Even now-every time I date someone-they ask why I waste my time with toys. Well-my answer is: "They don't bitch and I don't have to buy them dinner."-I'm gonna be single a long time.

my girlfirend supports me 100%, she even buys me some kits that she know's i'll want. She's at hobby lobby right now getting me the Academy 1/32 F-16 (it's my birthday in afew days, i told her that's what i want)

She's built a few, they may not be the best, but still pretty darn good for a beginner =)

My wife supports me with my addiction. She has even bought kits for me to build and put on "her" model shelf, mostly Star Wars but a few cars and planes to boot. As far as actually building, she doesn't have the patience for it.

My wife has been very supportive, but is getting a bit annoyed with my ebay buying and lack of finished kits. I tell her I'm stashing for retirement. Big Smile [:D]

Lady LemonJello has her own hobby, scrapbooking, but we support each other and even borrow tools/techniques from one another from time to time. She's not a big fan of the growing stash, but is pretty understanding since I usually only buy kits with gift money (birthday. Christmas, etc..). Her only complaint lately is that I'm in a seperate room when I work, so we can't really talk while we work. In our last home we both sat at opposite ends of the dinner table, now we each have a desk/workbench.

My wife is completely uninterested in my hobby yet is understanding and supportive enough to give me no guff whatsoever. She looks at detail painting and says 'There is no way I could have the patience to do that' Yeah, this coming from a woman who spent the better part of a year knitting a lace shawl that took Best of Show a couple of years ago. I'll have to post a shot of it someday. That is far more a work of art than anything I'll ever build.

Yeah Phil-it's okay for your SO to be uninterested but it's cool when they're tolerant. My Ex's wanted me to stop making models and get back to doing bird paintings so we would have more cash.

My ex was quite supportive, and wanted to give it a try, but lost interest. She got into figure painting a little however.
My current gf said she'd like to try it. We're going on vacation together at the end of summer, so she'll pick out a kit out of my stash, and we'll build two (she one, and I one) simultaneously, so she can try it. I can honestly say that after that, there will be no more interest from her, but she won't really care that I build them.

My wife is really supportive. I've built a couple of models for her that she expressed interest in (ST: USS Enterprise and a 1/72 scale Panther), but haven't been able to get her to try a kit. She's got her own hobbies (watercolor painting and needlework), but I get help from her on painting (I'm partially color-blind, so sometimes color mixing can be a challenge). Plus I get some castoff stuff from her hobbies such as nice brushes she's decided won't work for her. Best thing I got was a set of crochet needles - they work great for applying superglue!

My wife is supportive of my addiction. She has watched me build my kits and has said that there would be no way that she could do this with all of the small parts that need paint and glue. Well I have finally gotten her to try her first build at this time for we are going to see her folks at the end of the month and she wanted to have a kit built for her father to depict the car that he had to get rid of when she was born, a 1957 Mint condition Chevy Street Rod and here are some pix of this build that is not complete at this time.

So I hope that all will like this build, AND keep in mind that this is her first build.

This has given me a great idea. I have posted a thread on the group build site for a GB just for this thread. I hope that all will look and try to get your better half to try this hobby. I know that I am hooked doing the '57 Chevy Street Rod for my father.

My wife supports my hobby which is great. She will buy me models and tools for B'day Christmas etc and does take an interest in what I am doing. She does I'm sure think I'm mad however and occassionally will pass a sly comment if I'm seen heading for my workshop. This static modeling is preferable to R/C however as all but the painting can be done indoors. She likes that!!

She has not said a huge amount, other than "where the hell are you going to put THAT?"
maybe I should started with a 1/72 tiger moth!

Quincy,
For my wife, it's a combination of C. and D.
We have a deal, models are not allowed anywhere in the house except my two rooms, the basement modeling room and the basement family room. And I can pretty much buy what I need.
The reason? She insisted on dusting them too often and I got tired of fixing them.

Don
I know it's only rock and roll, but I like it.

My wife supports my hobby, and is looking to get into it as well. I just have to buy her the right kit. There's a couple she's expressed interest in, so once this month is over she'll be getting them.

My wife Lori is an active figure and miniature painter, specialising in fantasy and sci-fi.

It is great having a SO who enjoys the same hobby that I do, actually my stash has multiplied exponentially since we got married, which is not a bad thing really!

My wife is also a combination of C and D. She gave me one room only, just so she doesn't have to look at them she doen't like any of my models because they represent for her too much money 'lost'.

Ah, yes, Duke, the "My money is my money and your money is our money" syndrome ... know it well, yet another of the reasons I am single again. What saddens me about this thread is that so many married men feel that they have to ask for permission to have a hobby, or indeed any activity outside of making more and more money. There's just something very, very wrong with that picture.

I agree. One day I got angry at her after she complained about another Hobby purchase. I told her that she didn't have to ask permission or excuse HER hobby, (computers) so why did I? I then said that if she continued to complain, I'd find a new hobby hanging out in bars and drinking, watching sports at my friends' houses, and I wouldn't be asking permission to do THOSE things! So now we have an understanding: She 'doesn't notice' when I bring things home, and I keep it all out of site. Man, the battles we have to fight just to live!
