Hobby Lobby 1/3 Off Sale!!!
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, July 18, 2005 11:41 AM
OK, they call it 1/2 off sale, but after they mark up the "sale" price, it's really only 1/3 off. Case in point:

Revell 1/48 F-16 Reg. $10.99 "Sale" $15.99 I found a box way in the back marked with the regular price and snagged it.

Academy 1/48 Nieuport 17 Reg. $12.99 "Sale" $16.99 It had the sale price stickered over the regular price.

Revell 1/72 B-17F Reg. 12.99 "Sale" $19.99 This thing had 4 stickers on top of each other and it had been marked up and down twice since the last 1/2 off sale.

I have noticed this practice going on at my local Hobby Lobby for the last year and I decided to speak up. I E-mailed them this morning and 2 hours later (D@mn! That's fast.) the manager of my store called to offer me a in-store credit to use when the sale is over. I thanked him and took the credit. I ask him, "Why not just call it a 1/3 off sale and save the man hours of marking up and down the prices?" And he replied, " Few people notice the price change and fewer still say anything about it."

Well folks, I got mine. Now go get yours. If your store does this, send in those E-mails and complain. I plan to complain every time this happens, maybe Hobby Lobby will straighten up and fly right.

There are a couple of Hobby Lobbys I visit and I have never really noticed this practice at either of them - and believe me, I tend to watch the prices all the time - and once in a while it works for me. Last year I wondered into the Hobby Lobby in Salina and spotted a couple of 1/72 AMT Ju 88Ss on the shelves with a price tag of $6.95 each (and they weren't on the Clearance shelf). I asked a salesgirl if they were marked correctly, she got the Manager and he said yes they were. Guess where they ended up!
I would almost guess this is a practice of a local store - besides which, I've seen the same thing happen at an LHS when someone missed marking up a kit in the stack.

same happened to me Quincy.. they had the 1/24 Spitfire Mk.V on the shelf for $120, I watched it go on sale for $75, then one day I walked in and they had 3 of them on the end cap at $40.00 each... I could kick myself for only buying the one though.

I've never noticed the prices being marked up. I have noticed that they tend to put some of the more popular things on sale about the same time... (popular and expensive) like the Accurate Miniatures B-25 marked down to $30 from $44.95 etc.. I guess that keeps people from coming in and buying to ebay it... I dunno.. usually I can find what I want for 1/2 off when they have it though... (like the ton of Hasegawa 1/32 planes I got the last tie they had the sale)

My HL keeps there pricing very consistent. Sounds to me like your store may be behaving in a somewhat crokked manner. You may want to consider lodging a complaint with the corporate headquarters as HL generally tries to be scrupulous in all it's dealings.

I'm in my HL every week buying paint, brushes and other modeling stuff and my store always does this on all the sale items. One clue to look for is the "fresh" price sticker, it will be brand new. Another clue is multiple stickers on the item, stacked on top of each other. Looks like I'm going to have to ride this manager till he breaks.

There's a 1/24 Spitfire on the clearance shelf, been there for 6 months for $37.00. I would love to build it, but I don't have the room to display it. The wife says, "No planes hanging from the ceiling!!!" Oh well.

CEILING HANGER That is where I told my husband to put all of his airplanes at. He is in the process of doing an entire air battle in the living room and have it run into all of the other rooms. In fact, we went to HOBBY LOBBY tonight and he bought 5 more kits to build and hang. If he were to sit a plane on the shelf I would have to throw it in the trash because airplanes are to be in the air not on the ground.
