Your best kit
Posted by Glamdring on Saturday, July 30, 2005 7:20 PM
This has problably been done before ad nauseum, but I haven't seen it. In your opinion, what is the best kit you have ever worked on? What is the worst?

My best would have to be Academy's 1/72 f-84 Thunderjet and Academy's 1.250 Roman Warship and Tamiya's Dragon Wagon.

My worst would have to be Revell's 1/48 P38 Lightning and Ertl's 1/25 Pontiac Trans Am.

Fine Molds X-Wing starfighter was one of the best kits I've built. Tamiya's new WW2 Jeep is another.

So far, it's been a tie between the Tamiya 1/32 F-16 and their own 1/48 P-47 Bubbletop. Simply amazing fits.
Next Up: 1/35 Tamiya Merkava 1/48 Tamiya King Tiger 1/35 Dragon M1A1 AIM

The best I've built is probably Tamiyas 1/48 P-47D. Great detail and the fit of parts was awesome.

The worst is probably Hobbycrafts S2F-1 Tracker in 1/72. No detail and the fit of parts is crap.

Best: Tamiya 1/48 F4U-1D Corsair, practically fell together.

Worst: (so far) Revell F15C Strike Eagle my son bought. How they expect a ten year old to fit together this mismatch of plastic is beyond my comprehension and testing the level of my patience. He gave up and dumped it on me. I'm starting to look around for somebody else who I don't like very much, just so I can get rid of it. He is planning to get either a Tamiya or Hasagawa F15 to replace it.

So long folks!

Best: DML Tiger 1 Initial version
Worst: DML Sd. Kfz. 251/22, the fit sucked, the tracks are hard, the assembly is complex, I screwed up the camo,then...

Best: Tamiya 1/48 Me 262 (even though my cat bombed it before I could paint it)
Worst: 1/24 and 1/25 car kits by Revell and AMT, some are nice, but most have horrible fit and even worse moldings.

Best: tamiya T-55 Aacademy MiG-29 and 1/72 Revell fw-190 a8. The academy kit had horrible fit and poor detail, but i added many AM, and it turned out really nice when finished. The revell kit is just a little beauty. The Tamiya 1/72 offering probably fits a little betetr, but the Revell kit is cheaper, and I just love it for some reason. Besides a few minor fit problems give a kti character.

One of the best kits I ever built was the Heller RF-84(1/48). One of the worst , I agree would be the Revell P-38 (1/32) and then there was the AMT MiG 15 (1/48).

My best kit is always the one I'm working on. Constant improvement and applying new techniques is always a goal for me.
So far, I think my favorite has been Tamita's 1/35 Panzer II desert tank. It was small and simple, and was really my first attempt at painting camoflague and applying washes, and just turned out to be a neat little build.
I think the worst is the 1/48th AMT/Ertl A-10 Warthog I am currently working on. The details are poor, fit is worse, and there are warped pieces, flash, and ejector pin marks everywhere. I swear I have the last boxing before they threw the molds away! But despite the frustration, I'm still committed to making a respectable model out of it. Will just take a little time....and putty...and sanding.......

My best completed kit would have to be my Tamiya 1/48 P-47 Thunderbolt (razorback), it's just a fantastic kit. Runner up would be the AMtech TA-183, which was also a joy to build, and came out very nicely.

Cheers

Best fit was Tamiya Tiger I Late.
Worst fit was a tie between Trumpeter's M1 and ESCI's Demag.

Can we safely say that Tamiya usually makes the best kits?

Quite possibly the best kit I've built (and yes, I understood the question) was the 1/12 Britten V-1000 motorcycle - made by the Britten Motorcycle Company in New Zealand. It's spun cast pewter, and rather awful fit and somewhat soft detail - but something about the kit made me go all out with the superdetailing, and it's the finest model I've yet made.
But then again, pretty much any Tamiya kit has been a great build......and I like the Mauve/Eduard P-40N.......that's been a very nice build.

Cheers, LeeTree

Some of the best for me:
Hasegawa 1/72 F-111G Aardvark
Academy 1/72 ME-163 Komet (simply a little gem of a kit, no putty needed!)

Some of the worst:
Hasegawa 1/72 S2F Tracker
AMT Cardassian Galor Class starship from Star Trek DS9 (I was sooo disapointed)
