Well, it was good while it lasted

When I fist got here to the Czech Republic a little over a year ago, I was pleasantly surprized by the favorable prices of some of those Czech made aftermarket products that cost us an arm and a leg in North America. It was easy to get an Aires this, Eduard that or Czech Master something or other for a modeling project.

Well, I was out buying some resin stuff for my new vac form Avia S-199 kit today and it seems the good days are goneAngry [:(!]Sad [:(]Angry [:(!]

Apparently some tourist from somewhere where these things cost an arm and a leg opened their mouth in front of the wrong person (read hobby shop owner) to ask why these things cost so little here.

Well, next thing you know, prices are double on these things what they were when I first got here and for the past year that I've been here.

I know it won't solve anything, but I know this is a place where I can vetch and vent about such things and be understood when I do.

I'd complain about foreigners coming over and screwing things up if it weren't for the fact that I am one!Tongue [:P] (no,no I wouldn'tSmile [:)])

Anyone else ever have a good deal going on hobby supplies somewhere and have someone else screw it up on you?

Not models, but I've been in a place where prices were cheap, and people with more money than sense came in throwing it around, driving prices up. And others still thought the price was cheap.

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

Find that person who commented about the prices and put super glue in his tooth paste. That should make him keep his mouth shut.

Are the locals happy about this turn of events? Will they continue to buy at the new prices?

I'll take more money and less sense everytime. It is hard to believe that a Hobby shop owner with access to the web and a distribution system would not be well aquainted with prices for these items world wide. To blame it on "somebody with more money than sense" is a stretch. Maybe the distributor raised the domestic wholesale price, or availability drove up the retail price. Maybe in the local economy where these AM bits are manufactured, extra taxes were levied or some other cost in the manufacturing or materials supplier base forced a price increase which was passed along to the retailer.

There have been some very steep price increases on Eastern Bloc AM sets here as well. Some of the new Eduard AM sets cost more than the intended kit.

And I was planning to go to Prague next summer to get some cheap stuff!! (no really, I was or rather, I still am.)

As said by Crockett, there are loads of reasons why prices are going up. Another factor could be the entry in to the EU, and higher sales taxes that can come with this.
