I thought the Carpet Monster was Dead
Posted by MontanaCowboy on Sunday, August 28, 2005 7:52 PM
I recently moved my workspace from a carpet floor to a medium gray cement floor. I thought I had gotten rid of my carpet monster, but I was working with some zoom PE and, uh oh! on the floor with them. Does anyone have any tips for searching for lost PE? Don't worry little PE, the search boats ARE coming!Tongue [:P]

Good luck PE hunting!

I beat the carpet and concrete monster! I take the oldest sheet in the house (kids, get your mom's permission, adults, get your wife's, batchelors, buy another sheet) and lay it under my work space. If when something falls on the floor it is a simple matter of picking up two corners and folding the sheet. Everything will fall into the center where it is easily found. OH! I'm going to paste this into the "Household Objects" thread!

So long folks!

If you've got a fairly smooth floor, get a flashlight, turn it on, and lay it on the floor (in the general area and direction you think it went). Then turn off the room lights. The flashlight will cause the part to cast a shadow (small but it's there). That is assuming the part is already bent - If it's still flat, then all bets are off.

Laugh [(-D] Try doing that with a bunch of small paint spills and other small useless pieces on the floor. BTW it is flat. Thanx tho

The Carpet Monster is now the Concrete Monster. I'd use the Vacuum cleaner & panty hose trick. Works on carpet, should work on concrete.

I was working on my kit last night, installing seat belts. One piece was held by small tweezers and as I was ready to install it , it went flying. I looked for it in the carpet but assumed the Carpet Monster ate it. Getting ready for bed last night, I found the peice super glued to my sock.

So now I have a Carpet Monster and Sock Monster. Evil [}:)]

Will a magnet pick up PE? I've never bothered to check what that stuff is made of.

The easiest way on concrete is to sweep with a broom and scoop the flotsam into a dust pan, all your litttle bits (to include pop corn chicken) will show up in there. Use a synthetic broom, works every time. You can use that dust pan as if you're panning for gold!

i have the concrete monster problem at my house, heres what you do:

1. think about which way the piece bounced
2. DO NOT sweep the floor
3. Blow on the floor gently so your eye will catch anything that moves
4. If that fails, consider looking in another possible area
5. consider the size of the part, the smaller, the more it could have bounced and the harder it will be to find
6. If all else fail, bring out the shop vac, and search through the drum when your done

LOL LOL LOL! I found a PE canopy release hatch that I had lost while washing my hair. Straightened it out (after I finished the shower of course), and it sits proudly inside my 109G. Approve [^]

You think that's bad! just yesterday I superglued a toothpick into my hair!Blush [:I] The funny part is it was accidental. A week ago I was playing with the small, high speed motor again and wondered what it would feel like in my hair. It got closer and closer to the hair until it took of like a plane. I now know what a 18000 RPM motor does to your hair. PS, it not feel so good.

That's what you wear on your head when you search...

Okay, no it's not! Stretch a piece of old pantyhose or stockings over the end of a vacuum tube and the suction of the vacuum will pick up the stuff of the floor without sucking it into the bag. I bet a "Swiffer" would work, too!

I tried a Swiffer. It doesn't work very good on carpet. It just might work on concrete though. Good idea.

i went to a model show this weekend and i talked to a wife of a modeler
he wont let her near his model room with a vacuum cleaner
if she did she would probably come up with enough p/e for 3 or 4 models
she was funny

i guess the only way to not have a problem would be to sit in a pure white round room naked so as to never lose anything well except maybe your mindBig Smile [:D]

i was reading and laughing at this thread, especially the toothpick and 18000 rpm motor tool. that is too funny. As I was reading though I figured out exactly how to find your part (if you haven't yet). Think about which way you "think" it bounced and look in the opposite direction. Walah!! you should find it exactly where you didn't or wouldn't expect it to be. Big Smile [:D]
