Bill's half finished Spray Booth
Posted by Bgrigg on Sunday, September 4, 2005 6:36 PM
I decided I needed a spray booth. I thought I had a kitchen hood left over from the reno, but noooo, my wife took it to the dump. Sigh.

So I bought a new one! Tongue [:P] The hood, vent and the electrical bits are the only things I bought, the wood was all found material. I still need to attach the compressor, lexan doors (when I buy some lexan, that is Wink [;)] ) and give it a paint job. I thought I would have finished it today, but time flew faster than my ability. It's tall enough you can stand at it, and sized so that you can also sit and work. Anyway I thought I'd post a progress pic!

Let me know what you think. I already know it's not as nice as a new boat, so don't bother Vapo...Wink [;)]

So long folks!

Looks like you are close to having a really great spray booth ... I hope your blower motor has the brushes outside of the air flow ... in other words "boom-proof" ... Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I was worried about that, but apparently there isn't a problem. Guess I'll find out soon enough!

Well the truth of the matter is ... years ago I used an old bathroom exhaust fan that had the motor in the air flow ... and never crashed and burned ... but, I hear that it can happen ... just be careful ... and have fun Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

BG-use a gloss paint (white would be good as it'll reflect more light) to help with cleanup-dust will accumulate when it's not in use (even with doors) and not all over-spray will be evacuated.

Edit: oh, and add a turntable-a plastic one (lazy susan spice thingie will do).

The can I have is a gloss enamel pure white, so I'm ahead of you there. Wink [;)] It's even kitchen and bath paint so it can handle any excess moisture. Ironic, eh? Using enamel paint for a spray booth that will only see acrylics sprayed in anger...

I'm trying to find a good, cheap turntable, but I think the good ones aren't too cheap and the cheap ones aren't too good!

BG_acrylics suck! But hit the mega-store for a cheap spice rack-it just has to turn. Hardware stores also sell a ball bearing plate to make your own turntables.

PS-Ya got an old record turntable?

I DO have an old turntable, a Dual 704, but it plays my old records. And no, they're not 78s funny pants! LOL

I've seen the turntable I want, I just have to remember where I saw it. It's the kind that you put on your table rather than a spice rack. I feel bad tossing out the extra bits I won't need. The one I'm looking for is wood, I thought that might be handy to be able to add dowels to hold up the bits I'm painting.

So long folks!

Well BG-you've got this well in hand; good job! This old phart will shut up (for now). BTW; I don't use a booth, I do all my spraying in my neighbor's house-when she's not home.

Thanks! Here are some pics of the finished booth. Well, not quite finished. I forgot to buy a furnace filter! Banged Head [banghead] I also have to scrounge up a flourescent fixture, for now I'll take my chances with the incandescent. Since I'm using waterbased acrylics I'm not too worried about unintended explosions, and I'm pretty good with the intended ones.

Don't forget to turn it on:

Thar she blows!:

Yes. I'm within code Whistling [:-^]:

The moment I finished it I realized I could put a drawer in the front. Or is it that I designed it that way? Wink [;)]

BG-looks like a Badger in there! Your booth looks too nice to use-why don't you just grow some plants in there.

Good eye Trowl! That's my backup 150.

Heh, all that pristine whiteness. I'm almost afraid to start squirting paint into it!

I figure once I buy the lexan for the doors the booth will have set me back about $85 CDN, as I already had the wood, screws and paint. Had my wife not chucked out the old hood, it would have cost me half of that.

Now to work on my workbench! That will take a bit longer as I really do have to work on my deck...

So long folks!

Hi Bill, this is BillBig Smile [:D]
I guess great Bills think alikeWink [;)], but you out thunk meTongue [:P]. I built mine last summer, finally had to repaint it coupla weeks ago, the inside was getting too overworked, used the walls to paractice on with the remainder of paints left in the cup. Too bad your old exhaust fan was disposed of b4 u got to use it but, at least the new one will last u a looong timeSmile [:)]. I just stick A/C filters between the box opening and the fan, get a pack of three 4 like 2 bucks at Wal-Mart. It collects the paint material b4 it gets to the fan and the 2 speed fan sucks out the vapors really fast. I posted mine and gave a little explaination in the "paint at home" thread u were on. Yours is much nicer than mine, congratulations on building a superb paint booth!Bow [bow]
OH, and good luck on your workbench, I know it is going to be awesome, here is a pic of mine, also cost nothing, table is old door with landscape timbers 4 legs, shelves r leftovers, only thing I spent money on (besides paints and such) was the pegboard, $2.00 on that. I always wanted a room 4 me by myself, finally bought a house with an extra room in mind for my reading and computer, didn't know it would become a model building room, but it turned out great 4 me, hope you get what you want also Bill!Wink [;)]

Be good & have FUN Bill,

Bill

Bill (Grigg) Great looking booth. I wish I had the space for one like that.

Bill (Sonic-boom) That’s a nice work area. Where did you get the throw away dropper leaning against the tank and are they available in bulk to keep ‘e em cheap?

Hi MarcBig Smile [:D],
Yes, they are available, I will let you know tomorrow, Deb already went to sleep. We talked about it one evening while she helped me unwrap them, they were indy wrapped cause these were sterile[:0], she brings 'em home from work, she is head of a microbiology lab doing work for NASA, so she can do as she pleases,Wink [;)]. I cannot remember exactly the figure, but for un-sterile, it was like 1,000 for 15-20 dollars, I just can't remember right now, sryBlack Eye [B)]. But not any more than that in cost. If you are really interested, I can get you all you want, because I was feeling kinda guilty and told her I wanted to pay for them, so, we can go in together and get a coupla thousand and I will send 'em your way, or we can get more if you want. I know what you mean, I saw the same type (maybe a little different) in a LHS and they wanted something like $4.00 for 5-6 of em!!!![:0]SoapBox [soapbox]. I use one 1 time and have to throw it away!! So, anyway, tomorrow I will come back here to this post and post the correct amount, and if u want, just E-mail me and we will go from there!

Be good & have fun,
Bill
