BACK UP your files! Losing files = lost resources!
Posted by gbarnes on Saturday, July 12, 2003 3:26 PM
Last week I had a major computer meltdown and lost everything that I didn't have backed up, which was pretty much all mail, files, and links, including my kit list. I have always been a bit suspicious of people using that excuse (my computer broke!), but from now on will be much more sympathetic. After being on the phone from North Carolina to India, Canada, and Arizona for hours and hours, I am finally back on-line, and will have to reinventory about 3000 kits, re-research all my notes for aircraft projects, and remember contacts and resources. A message to everyone - BACK UP EVERYTHING you can't replace! A little irritation now can save major headaches! It all started with a simple upgrade to Windows (I thought), but I ended up having to format my drive, reload Windows, reload all my drivers, applications, communications, etc. Its not the end of the world, but WHAT a pain.

Build a model today for the FUN of it.

A computer tip for you, you've probably already finished your rebuild, but if you partition your hard drive so it has a C and a D drive you can keep all your important stuff on the D drive including your .pst (e-mail, if you use outlook) and if you have another crash you can format the C drive only, reload your OS and all your files are still on the D drive. If you want to partition it without reloading it, get Partition Magic and you can partition it on the fly so to speak without reloading. That partition will remain unless you have a physical hard drive failure but that's not too common. If you would like more info or help, email me and I'll be glad to help (I do it for a living Tongue [:P] )

Yep, erush has it cased. I've got actually 3 hard drives in my computer partitioned out the wazoo. I'm kinda anal about things like that so I've actually got a partition for games, one for programs, one for data and then multiply that for a couple of different OS's and I've got about 13 different partitions. Anyway, long story short, that's a very good suggestion.

What, me a computer geek? [:0] Tongue [:P]

Good suggestions, and I will have to check out the Partition Magic. Plus copying critical stuff on to CD, plus copying to floppy, plus printing out, plus writing notes.......... OK, maybe I shouldn't get TOO carried away! Anyway, I do appreciate the advice.

Gerald,

Sorry to hear about your meltdown. I've been there myself (literally, meltdown. My mobo voltage regulator fried, taking everything else with it in the ensuing voltage spike!)

As a PC tech, I wouldn't recommend saving things to floppy anymore. Floppies are magnetic medium, and therefore deteriorate. Burning to CD is the best idea that I can give you. With the price of burners and the medium, you can pick up a decent ffast burner for less than alot of model kits. I also have a small 20GB HDD in my system just to use as a backup, but it can fail, too, and more often than you think.

Partition Magic is also a good alternative if you need space, but be careful. Older versions will seriously mess up 2000 and XP. I've seen it several times. Be sure to do your research before doing anything drastic.

If you need any help or advice, feel free to drop me a line.

Sorry about the partial info gbarnes. If you have windows XP make sure you get Partition Magic 8.0 or newer if they have anything yet. I think ( but don't take it for gosple) that 6.0 or higher is fine for Windows 2K. If you have Windows ME, go buy windows XP Big Smile [:D]. I don't know how P.M. would work with windows ME. Tongue [:P].
Feel free to e-mail though.
