If I'm reading the captions right, the sub pictured above is actualy a US Navy model used for testing screw designs and the like. I've seen pictures of similar things for the Seawolf class too.

What a waste of money.

I would think that the price tag includes a pack of electronics to aid in analysis of certain design aspects for research. A waste of money? hardly. The United States Navy would probably disagree. We make the best submarines and this is one of the reasons why. The advantage of modeling new design initiatives and to test them in a hydraulic laboratory setting is invaluable. 2 million is a small price to pay to insure the lives of our sailors and the security of our nation. These people do have lives, and they spend them researching ways to protect yours.

That price tag is probably on the full research project, materials, sensors, personnels, facility rental, equipments (I want one of them plasma cutters!!!). My friend at lockheed n I were talking about wind tunnel testing prototype models and 2 mil is a small number for a project like that.

$2,000,000 is chicken feed. You can't imagine what a paltry sum that is relative to military R&D projects, especially when it comes to submarines.

$2 million divided by starving children. Let's examine that!

WHO claims 15 million children per year die of starvation, that would be less than $0.13 per child. I don't think that would have helped much.

WHO also claims that 160 million are malnurished, that would be $0.0125 per child.

$2 million would'nt even feed New Orleans for very long, Let's say there are only 20,000 people who stayed in NO during Katrina, that's $100 per person. That might feed them for a week, and there were more people than that who stayed.

$2 million seems like a vast amount of money, but when you are talking about LOTS of people it's pocket change.

Now, pet food is a $ billion dollar industry. Americans (and Canadians!) spend more per year on cats and dogs than starving people. Put that in your hippy dogooder wanna see peace on earth pipe!

government testing bills at work guys. ive gotta admit, while the research info gathered from this sorta thing is without a doubt valuable to some degree, i cant but wonder how much it would cost using the old russian system, of employing several very taented engineers using pencil and paper. they did that in a lot of their a/c projects and got great results. just look at some of their modern fighters. and they did it at a fraction the cost. just my
