Bad news on the BBC over the weekend. My City of London has finally decided to retire the World famous 'Routemaster' busSad [:(] I think everybody on the planet associates these buses with Britain and london in particular. The PC crowd say the open boarding platform is unsafe and the bus has to go. Of course they were meant to retire back in the 70's but popular opinion kept them going by stripping parts from others to keep the smaller and smaller fleet going.
Well, this week is the last of them.2 or 3 will be kept for tourist route rides but the majority are going. I think every tourist to london buys at least a diecast routemaster and a black cab I suppose they will continue to live in the souvenir shops at least. I used to catch the 38 everyday from Hackney to Holborn.Upstairs with a good book Smile [:)]

Do you think retiring them is related to the Bombings that happened some months ago?

Could be..easy to get on and off.More likely that age has finally caught up with them. They have been soldiering on since the 50's. Not surprisingly a group has been set up to campaign to save them...single decker bendy buses and modern swedish buses will just not be the same.

Mass transit that's easy to get on and off? No wonder they want to stop using them!!

We have a few of those buses in Victoria BC for the tourist trade. We also have modern double-decker buses here in Kelowna. They had to raise the electrical cables all over town to use them here.

So long folks!

Too bad, I was hoping to visit London sometime and ride on one; guess when I get around to going I'll have to hand over the bigger tourist money to ride one.

those things are pieces of cultural history too. can you even think of anything better to look at if you're gonna look at a people? notes scribbled on seat backs, stickers on places, or just the buses themselves. thats too bad about them. NYC had to do that back in the nineties with their checkerboard taxi cabs. those things were icons as well, but they fell victim to the clean air people and strict mtor vehicle regulations that pushed them out of the city.

its really sad to hear that, they smobolized a lot in London
