IPMS Regulations - Is it allowed in competition
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 7:58 AM
Can I enter a model in an IPMS event that doesn't have any plastic in it? 100% of the parts either came out of the box or were scratch-built by me. But the model doesn't have a stitch of plastic in it and given the "P" in "IPMS", and the way the competition regulations read, I'm wondering if I can enter this car.

Anyone have any knowlege on the subject?

Thanks.

Andy.

Yes you can. You will see little white metal figures, diecast cars, wooden ships, etc.

"COMPOSITION. The use of plastic as set forth above is encouraged; however, the use of other modeling materials is allowed as the builder sees fit. Judging standards of finish, attention to detail, and authenticity will be the same, regardless of the materials used."

Thanks Rob. I've seen lots of contest entries that had lots of materials BESIDES plastic, but I don't recall ever seeing one that had absolutely NO plastic.

Stroll through the figure tables. The majority of the figures are white metal. Some are tiny gaming figures, others are 54mm (1/32 scale) made by companies like Andrea Miniatures or Bego. No plastic in those models.

Andy,

In general, IPMS "encourages" the use of plastic as the primary construction material in most modeling genres. However, as an organization, they also realize that the aftermarket and alternative materials industries have really taken off during the past decade or so. Additionally, in certain genres (ie, Figures) the vast majority of material used is resin. IPMS has always attempted to embrace as many of these alternate materials as possible.

Now for the disclaimers:

One of the biggest problems IPMS Contest Directors saw during the 1990's was the influx of bogus modelers entering contests with pre-manufactured diecast automobiles. The IPMS rules have always stated that construction of the model has to be the "sole work of the modeler" (exception: Group Entries). Therefore, there is an ongoing dialogue within the IPMS community regarding the use of "non-plastic media" and what constitutes an eligible model.

There is some variation in what is allowed from contest to contest. The IPMS National Contest rules (Competition Handbook) are not mandatory for local contests and you will see both more liberal and more stingent rules. The best thing to do is check with the local Head Judge before the contest to get a ruling on your particular model. The same holds true if you want to enter a Regional or National competition.

Andy,

I've built models completely from brass and entered them. As Rob stated, plastic is not a requirement anymore.

If you used resin, then technically, it's plastic...I think...or was that...oh nevermind.

Also, if you are using a kit, bring the instructions along which will help support that it didn't start as a diecast buildup.

Philip is right, as I discovered to last weekend when I turned up to a contest sans instructions which meant I was instantly 10 points down. Oh well live and learn.

Philip - thanks for the tip. I usually bring along a binder with photos detailing the build, but it never occurred to me to bring the instructions also. Thanks very much.
