Looking to resupply my model paint inventory.
Posted by Cableguy9238 on Saturday, October 29, 2005 8:33 PM
I'm getting back into the hobby after about ten years away. I have pretty much gotten myself restocked with everything I need to get going; tools, brushes, glue, airbrush...now all I really need is paint!

Are there any companies or online hobby stores that sell cheap paint, put together sets of paint or sell large lots of paint? I know there are small Testors sets, but those only come with 5 or 10 different bottles. I'm looking at purchasing a number of different colors, possibly with multiples of some.

I would like to stock up on paints because model paints seem to be hardest thing for me to get a hold of in my area. I don't have a LHS, so the closest hobby shop is 25 minutes or better away. The local Hobby Lobby and Michaels stores don't carry much more than very basic colors of model paint.

Any help is much appreciated!

There are no large sets of paints, except for the Andreas kits for figures.

What type of paint are you wanting to buy? www.greatmodels.com sells almost every type of paint and for good prices.

hmmm seems to me like your looking at a couple hundred dollars expenditure here... Model Master makes paint sets like "WW2 RAF colors" and so on, you might want to look into those.

Thanks for the help, fellas!

I had figured I would be in the $100-150 range (or more) one way or the other. After some more searching and a few e-mail from friends, the only decent sized sets I have been able to find are the above-mentioned Andrea sets or the Vallejo paint sets. Those weren't exactly what I was looking for, so it looks like I'll be going the by-the-bottle purchase route.

Hey Cable, go down to Walmart, go to the paint department and get one can of every color of their ColorPlace paint in the spray cans. There's about 15 or so and at 94 cents it's hard to beat. Then head over to the craft department and pick up a color wheel. They run about 3 or 4 dollars. Next head to the pharmacy and get some of those bathroom plastic cups for mouth wash. You get a hundred or so in a big bag for a couple of bucks. Go home and get on the internet, go to all the model paint company's websites and look up their color charts. Use your color wheel to duplicate any color you choose and save yourself a ton of money.

At the height of my modeling, I had over 300 bottles of paint from 8 different companys. I had about 30 different shades of gray from Model Masters alone. One day I was sitting at the bench looking at all those shelves of paint and I knew that I had to simplify things. So I sold all that paint and learned to mix my own. I'm telling you the honest truth here, you can duplicate any color on earth with just those basic colors and a color wheel. So, the next time your in the hobby shop and one of those paint pimp fanboys says,"So and so company just put out their new battleship camo flat gray with earth tone highlites and it's GREAT!!!" All you have to say is,"Can you print it out for me?"

I can only show you the path,
You must walk the path.
You will open yourself to a wider world.

Not to mention the large batch of self-mixed colors like skin, etc.
Other thing I also hate is to grab a bottle of paint at about 22:00 only to find it dried out and it was my last bottle.

Because of the very same reason I am also going that way, still using up a lot of "old" colors. At the moment I am using Liquitex acrylics but might go for Golden(need to give them a try first).
Started to love paper-palettes, great stuff and cheap.

Mixing my own colors I found easier than expected, said that I don't model a lot of stuff where color authenticity matters a lot.

Another advatnage of the colors I use now is that they are pure water based so no fumes, thinners, smells, etc.

HTH.

Yeah, I know what you mean Zen. Mixing your own colors is fun and very easy also. All of the model paint companys that I have contacted have sent me color charts of their paints. Testors sent me an 8 page wire wrapped binder of all their lines of paint ( Model Master, Floquil, Polly Scale, Etc.).

I use both enamels and acrylics, sometimes on the same model. I have been using Liquitex paints for 2 years now and I'm very satisfied with them. They have great color density and are almost bulletproof when fully cured. I recently finished Revell's 1/28 scale Fokker DR-1 with their Crimson Red and my custom mix of their blue and white for sky blue. It came out very well indeed. I use to use their acrylic thinner, but have discovered that a 50/50 mix of distilled water and rubbing alcohol with a couple of drops of dish soap works better. I too have heard good things about Golden and will probably grab some of their black and white the next time that I'm at the art store.

I use a acrylic craft and artist brand sold at HobbyLobby called DecoArt. They have every color imaginable and with the above mentioned techniques on mixing, you can make any color you want.

These paints are great for both brush and airbrush work but do require you to prime the plastic, which I use Krylon spray primer, and then seal it with Future.

These paints retail for about $.80 per bottle and HL marks them down to as low as $.45.

I also use Graumbacher artist acrylics which cost a bit more. I am not a real big fan of enamels because they require so much to set up and clean up and are hard to blend and mix. Plus, they are at almost $3 a bottle.

Hiya Cableguy,

I'm probably late in picking up your post, but have a look at what we offer with our Colourcoats enamels. We have over 400 accurate all-military colors, covering ships, aircraft, and armor. You can buy individual colors, or sets. You'll find everything listed on our secure website. We have no minimum order on paints, and we ship worldwide.

Cheers,
