Advice requested: starting a local hobby club
Posted by qtaylor on Friday, November 18, 2005 11:36 AM

I'm new to modelling, but I loved being part of a model club before I moved.  I'm an hour's drive either direction to a club.  Fortunately, there's a small LHS in my rather rural town, and he's willing to support a club in a limited way (buy 10 models, get the 11th free, type of thing.)

There are a few things that I would want to emphasize, and a few things I would like to not emphasize.

To emphasize:

All welcome: ages, skill levels, model interests

Modelling as a hobby of techniques

Social aspects

To NOT emphasize:

Competition

Judgement

Now, before I put a sign up and commit myself, I would like to hear from any of you that have experience in running, participating in, or purposefully not participating in a model club.  This is completely new ground for me, so please help me plug some things in on my mental map.

Q.T.

Couple of suggestions for you.

You could email IPMS Canada and request a copy of the Chapter start up information. As well if you read through their website you will get some ideas as to how to attract members etc.

I am awaiting a copy of the start up information to start a club here in Waterdown, Ontario. There are a fair number of modelers here, however there is no local club. I know there are modellers around because the variety store stocks Fine Scale Modeler every month and it sells out quickly. Luckily for me the owners always put my copy aside when they arrive.

I have placed ads in the local library and once started meetings will be hosted in the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. I have listed the club in the FSM club section, take a look there to borrow some ideas.

I hope this gets you started towards your goal. Good Luck.

Cheers;

Gregory

That's a fantastic idea, using the Legion.  I'll look up the IPMS site tonight.

Thanks :)
