Paint Booth.Cheap!!!
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, July 24, 2003 11:24 PM
I was in need of a paint booth and did not want to spend lots of $$$ on one. So..I went to Home Depot and bought a cheap batroom ceeling/wall vent fan(this fan even had a regular wall plug on it) and a foam air conditioner filter and a mesh furness/ac filter. I had a rrubbermaid container, don't know the correct size but it6 is 15"wide x 22" long x and 16" deep with snap on top.
I laid the fan on one side of the tub and marked it with a sharpir and used a knife to cut it out. The fan fits snuggly into the opening. I had to make a few adjustments on the metal box around the fan with a pair of tin snips. After I was ok with the fit of the fan I use duck tape to seal around the fan, inside and out. I did use the scrap pieces of the cut out tub to reinforce aroune the hole. I used super glue and duck tape on this. I drilled a very small hole in what now is the top of the tub so I could put a wire through this hole to hang parts up that I airbrush. The filters were cut to fit the fan opening. I put the mesh filter into the opening and used velcro to let the foam filter stay in place. I also cut a paper cup to fit over the exhust opening(in my fan it is a 3" plastic tube about 3-4" long). I filled the piece of cup with small pieces of both types of filters.
Well, I just got done useing my new paint booth and it works just fine. The only other mod I will do is to tape from the bottom a piece of cardboard to help absorbe some of the paint mist.
I live in a moible home and don't have a basement or a garage to work in so I use the laundry room and had no paint mist lingering in the air at all.
I hope this little bit of money saving technology helps a few of the modelers out there.
Back in modleing aftr raising a family of 4 kids and now disabled. The last model I built was I think in 1967 or 68. I'm enjoying every bit of this hobby again.

Welcome back to the hobby, Ron, and welcome to the FSM community.

We're always looking for new tips, and I may just have to try out your booth idea, although the range hood I have for one is about 48" long, so I think I may need a bigger box. Great idea!

Ratboy that does sound like a good set up and I don't want to be a spoiler but if your exhaust fan is not a sealed unit you run a risk of fire from the paint fumes flowing through the wiring on the fan. Check yours out and see, most bathroom fans are not sealed because they aren't designed to move flammable vapors (contrary to popular belief Tongue [:P] ). It is VERY dangerous because the paint thinners and paint itself is VERY flammable in it's highly vaporized state coming out of an airbrush. If you get one little arc on that fan motor while you're spraying it could be bad news.

Welcome back to the hobby and enjoy yourself!
