I am trying to find out if there is a way to find out why medals were awarded to a person during a war. My grandfather recieved 2 bronze stars in Korea and no one knows the story behind them and he never said much about it before he died. Appreciate any help.

Yes there is. What Branch? I will guess Army. You can try under the Freedom of Information Act. Try the link below. If he was not in the Army, then try the other sevices. they usually have search links on there webpages. Just type Freedom of Information Act hit search. If you have any trouble shoot me an email.
Chances are they were awarded for some type of bravery under fire. Good Luck

He was with the Marines, not sure about company or anything like that all though I would have loved to have found that out to. The only thing I know for sure is that he mainly drove a supply truck and had a few stories he told me.

The curator of the 45th Infantry Division Museum was telling me how to do it just a few weeks ago. There's a card you fill out (can't remember what it's called) and you send it to Kansas City (Maybe it was St. Louis). He said it may come back marked "No records available" but to resubmit it right away. It works the second time almost everytime.

True I don't remember the details but call up your local VA or VFW office, or a recruiter. Someone will point you in the right direction.

Try the FOI act, but you can also request information on your dad from the infromation provided on this weblink:
http://www.angelica.dds.nl/faqusarmy.htm

Also, call the local U.S. Marine Recruiting Office near you, or the Public Information Officer of the nearest Marine facility near you. They should be able to help. When you're able to track downthe specific unit he was in, you can contact the appropriate Regimental Association for more information. Good luck with your hunt. This was the approach I used to find out about my Dad's career in WWII and Korea. - Ed

Good luck with your search. It'll be worth all the trouble you go through in the end.
