and where the plywood has a smooth side just throw some clear poly over it for now             if you manage to get a router later hey great

That seems like a pretty sound idea to me (the clear cast resin thing) I've never worked with it myself, but I would think it should work.  I figure since I've already got the formica for mine I'll just stick with that, pain in the butt though it is.  Right now it's too cold around here for the contact cement I'm using to cure correctly so I don't have any real chance of finishing it till spring anyhow.  It seems like every two weeks somebody's little garage RV factory is going out of business, so maybe I'll get lucky and find a laminate router before then.  I don't have the patience to cut off 18 lineal ft of laminate with a file though.  I'd sooner keep my bare plywood.

They do make an epoxy you can mix up and pour on your wood projects. It dries very smooth, and can be polished to a mirror like finish. I was amazed how good it looked, and it doesn't seem to darken the wood! Its called EZ pour. My buddy said its expensive? I know they sell kits for diffrent sizes of projects, it might be something to look into. Good luck.

on the topic of lamination, i just resanded an old coffee table i had in the garage and redyed the color.  can i just pour some clear cast resin on the top to laminate it?  or what would be the best way to finish it.

and yea, i am only 22 and had never really any significant carpentry work, just a few hours too many watching yankee's workshop on pbs and a new belt-sander plus a contour sander from dremel. 

Thats where you've done it before I went through the carpenter's apprenticship and we had to build a top and laminate it, so I thought maybeee? A metal file works real good for triming the laminte  to, slower, but it gets the same result. Good luck Phil.

Thank you both.  As for what I do for a living, I prepare income tax returns.  However, I spent several years in the custom cabinet shop of a cargo trailer factory where I gained significant experience building cabinetry and countertops.  It isn't that hard, you just need the right tools and a couple of specific bits of knowledge.  Unfortunately, I'm now lacking one of the tools to finish the job and nobody I know has the right tool and I'm not sure I want to spend $100 for such a highly specialized tool.  I'm still pondering that one.  As for the TV, all in good time.  The 'media center' is still a work in progress.

Isn't the T.V. kinda small? Certainly you could get one of those nice big plasma flat screens on the wall in front of the desk.

Let's not forget our priorities......T.V's in every room!!!! Even if the room is the size of a closet

 

Congrats Phil! I bet its nice to have your own place to work in. No cat hair in your paint and nothing trying to play with your airbrush while you are trying to spray something? What are you going to do with all your extra time Oh, wait, build more models!

What is it you do for a living? I saw that you said you laminated the counter yourself?
