Removing Body from Chassis?
Posted by Shirako on Monday, February 6, 2006 8:29 PM

Not sure if this is place to post this but here goes,

I had a multi model kit I bought several years ago, 3 Ford Mustangs, and the body painting is terrible, I want to remove them from the chassis so I can strip and repaing them, whats the best way to go about this?

Shirako;

Not entirely sure on your posted question, but here goes.

To strip the paint use an Oven Cleaner Spray (Easy-Off). Place the cars in a sealable container or plastic bag and coat with the oven cleaner. Leave them overnight sealed in the bag and you should be able to simply rinse the paint off with running water and a slight scrub with an old toothbrush.

To remove the body from the chassis...Try stripping the paint first, the reason I say this is I do not know what type of glue/adhesive was used to build these originally. Sometimes old glue will simply "pop" apart with a slight prying at the seam/joint, depending on the age and type of glue/adhesive used.

If you could provide some more details, I can possibly advise you further.

Cheers;

Gregory

Man thats a tough one, I know the glue is over 3 years old, but I am unsure if it is super glue or testors glue.

Shirako;

The next best thing I could suggest is that once you have stripped the paint off with the oven cleaner. Give each a good scrub with liquid dish soap and rinse thoroughly. Once that's done fill a plastic container with laundry bleach and soak the car(s) overnight. Sometimes the bleach bath will soften the bond of the glue enough that the pieces can be pulled apart with little force applied.

Hopefully this works for you.

Cheers;

Gregory

an Acetone based nail polish remover applied ditectly onto the seams will do the trickSmile [:)] you might need to lightly scrape it with the backside of a #11 blade & it should pop loose

After some messing around with it, I finally got it, thanks for the replies though, I can use these techniques to get some of the smaller parts off. :) Now I just gotta strip and paint them.
