Storing models
Posted by bablenw on Sunday, February 12, 2006 5:15 PM

I've got a question about storing unbuilt kits. I want to move my unbuilt kits out to my garage to give me more storage space in my model room. Will the variations in temperatures harm the plastic or the decals?  Is there a way to protect them from the elements? It can get quite cold in the winter and quite humid hot in the Summer.

Appreciate any assitance

Thanks

Large temperature variations aren't good for anything, but I don't think plastic would be effected too much. I could be wrong. UV light will make them brittle, so keep them out of the light. Also, keep them dry, as you don't want to have to wash mold off of them or have the boxes decay. The most important thing is to take your decals out and store them in clear pastic sheets, in a binder, indoors. The decals will decay faster than the plastic kit.

Where you store the model kits outside can make a huge difference ... if you store them in a garage attic, in a climate like you might find it south Texas in the summer, be prepared to go back months later and discover the contents of said boxes melted down into puddles of plastic about 1/4-inch thick. I was considering putting them in a storage closet or an old chest of drawers. I had thought of the attic but it's too difficult to get to and I don't want them melting. I can find an binder and put them in there and store them inside.

Thanks for the help.

Hey... now I really feel special, like one of the family here.

I actually had people offering to store my extra stash of models for me.   Big Smile [:D]

Gee Joe... you sound just like my son...

Matter of fact, I think the little squirt snagged a couple of my kits already...

Not to worry, I have the storage problem solved and have room for a few more.  Wink [;)]
