How'd I do that?

Oddly, after I returned from my 10+ year sabbatical I started looking at my old builds and thinking "Man, I really sucked, how could I have thought that was good?"

I can feel for you.  Lately it seems like I'll get on a roll, see the skills and results improving with each project, and then, due to work, I'm gone for about six months and I feel like I'm back to square one again when I get back to my hobby bench.

I had even started dabbling in scratchbuilding some interior items for one kit, and had kitbashed a couple of others before this latest "excursion" landed in my lap.  I'm hoping I don't make a hash of my previous work in my haste to get back into this hobby when I'm home again.

Last night I was rotating some of my models that are on display. I put away a sorry looking 1/48 Wildcat (canopy missing, parts broken). I looked at the paintjob and it was great, lol. Ah well...Ill just have to build more until my skills get back to where they should be...

 

Glad to hear I am not alone.

I came back after a 15 plus yr hiatus and was LOST!!!  the kits were 1000% better, different glues, different paints etc... I practiced, but also asked a LOT of questions here and got better...  I'm still not back to where I started but have come a long way and learned new things along the ride... It's practice, but also time that will get you back in the groove I think...

As certain as can be, you can still hold your airbrush with the same degree of security you ever have, but you probably just can't use it with the same finesse. You said it, practice, practice, practice.

Lessee… now which end of a hobby knife am I supposed to hold…

Oh yes. But it didn't stop with just the paint.

It was everything.

I just came back after about 10 years and I know I have forgotten more than I can relearn.

 

I resemble that remark…
