Creating molds
Posted by wolfpac on Monday, March 27, 2006 1:56 PM

I read in an issue of FSM about maiking your own molds.  I have since lost the issue (two moves later), and was wondering if there is an online how to.

Thank you,

Erik

That's the one.  IIRC they demonstrate how to make the mold, then show about creating the part.

FSM, May, 2005.

Bare Metal Foil has an online tutorial.

One thing I don't think either mentions enough is that you must have a separate air channel from the lowest point in the mold cavity to the top of the mold, especially with small parts (like 1/42 or 1/72 figures or parts thereof.) The only way around this is a vacuum molding set up. If you can pull a vacuum on the mold before the resin starts to set, you don't need the channel.

I found this out the hard way… (a figure's legs are not enough.) Black Eye [B)]
