Looking good there. In fact, all of it was pretty good. I wish I'd had something like that when I was that age, I might have developed technique a lot better and sooner that I did. I'd have been a better artist and a better modeler. Keep up the good work. Drawing is important I think.

Hi Jason!
I looked at the website and saw the pictures of your Gundam kit! Wow! You did a great job. I have one of those kits too (not exactly the same one), but I haven't had a lot of time to work on it.
Nascar kits are fun too because they're fairly challenging. Do you have fun doing the decals!! I'm glad to see that you won an award at a contest!! I won my first award this year too, and it was very exciting.
Good luck with your art! I'd like to see some pictures of your #24!!

Dale, awesome story. I am a special ed teacher here in Ohio and I am going to give this some thought as to how to incorporate model building in my arts and crafts curriculum. My Dad got me into model building when I was about 10 and now I am exposing my 8 year old to the craft. Great father/son activity for rainy days.

Besides the above lessons, it also teaches problem solving. Keep up the good work Jason.

And remember, like all forms of Art - It is supposed to be fun and relaxing. If you get frustrated with the process, put it away for awhile till you can come back to it with fresh eyes and vigor.

Lots of lessons can be learned through modelling; eye/hand coordination, reading and history lessons(as you research your subject), patience, attention to detail and the pride of accomplishment. I 've started 3 of my 4 boys on model projects to stimulate their artistic interests and keep them away from TV and Playstation. Their ages are 12, 11 and 6.

My idea with this is let each of meet my students. I will do this one at a time as they come into my class room. It is my hope that maybe you can use this Idea to teach other kids about model building, or look back to what you did with your models as a kid.
I teach out of my house. I have been teaching Visual Arts for over 15 years. I have been an artist for over forty years.
I have worked with Jason for about 3 years. He lives in Ohio country on a farm with his mom and dad. He has two younger brothers. Over the past year Jason has found auto racing he loves Nascar. To date he has done seven models. He started building legos at the age of seven. I started him with a Gundam. On that model we inked panel lines and did a nice wash. You can see his Gundam on my website.
Jason has built one race car #24. Last fall he entered the model, drawings and a scratch built Lego in an art show . For his age group he won BEST OF SHOW! He is working on one other car now. He would like to build some planes and tanks.
I just showed him this months FSM mag. He just smiled from ear to ear. What a site! I need to explain some things to him now, so I will have to keep this short. I will add more at a later date.
Three years ago I would have never thought of having my art students work on models. Now I know that it will work and that each student will learn more about Art and life from building models, then just knowing how to draw. WOW!
