World's most expensive bottle of paint

ouch, sorry to hear that.  yea my fingers have a tough time with paint bottles no matter how much i bench nowadays.  feels like i am dislocating all the bones as i try to twist those caps.

Or when you put your bottle of paint in one of those super duper, high speed, paint shakers only to have the cap loosen while being shook at 3000 rpms, all within the time that it takes you to raid the fridge.

Then returing to your model room to see it resemble a Picasso painting.

Yup, know the feeling.

Except when you realize that paint really costs $330.24 a gallon which is cheap compared to Model Master's half ounce bottles which cost $382.72 a gallon.

I have a good story about a bottle of Future also.  It goes like this:  An australian fellow (Hi Lloyd) wanted a bottle of Future, I said no problem I'll send one to you by mail.  I'm located in canada and the bottle is $9.99 CDN plus applicable taxes 15% which end up $11.49.  Shipping cost from Canada to Australia: around 16$, when we transform that into Australian money it makes it around $33.00 for a bottle of Future.  It's not that bad for a modeler since that bottle will last for ever. Fees to Lloyd for transfering the money from is account to my paypal: $0.50.  Paypal fees to transform the australian money into canadian money: $1.69 (not bad) so what's left is $25.33 canadian.  Paypal fees to transfer the money into my personal bank account $0.50 (cheap).  Paypal fees because I made a mistake when I entered my account number and the transfer is refused: $30.00 Canadian so I ow them $4.59.    After discussing with 4 different people at Paypal, the $30.00 will be returned to me but I had to fight.  The money is still not in my account yet, so I hope there is no other hidden charges!

That bites.  Lord knows that I have spilled my share of bottles, but thankfully it hasn't been on the floor.

And the worst part about this whole incident is that the "fresh citrus scent" of the wonder chemical he used to get the paint out is still in the air ... I feel like I've moved to a Florida orange grove or something.

Although it didn't involve modeling paint, I have a quite similar, but more serious "OOPS!".  I also paint cars, bikes, planes, etc.  When I was in VF-211 at Miramar the corrosion control guys were disposing of a couple pallets of aircraft paint.  I thought this would be a great way to get some free paint in official military colors.  Hmmm, sounds good right?  Well...I grabbed half a dozen cans of black and a dozen or so of the two-part kits for red, yellow and blue.  I didn't have a storage unit at my apartment yet, so in the front door I go carrying a couple gallons of black and a couple cans of the catalyst for it.  The cat was, of course, lounging in THE worst possible spot imaginable.  I tripped over him dropping the paint, which of course popped open from the impact.  Now bear in mind I said I had the paint AND the catalyst in my hands....  Ya know, it's amazing how fast that two-part paint sets up, simply amazing.  Fortunately, there is a bright side to this; they were already planning on replacing the carpet that week anyway, my apartment just got moved to the head of the list. 

These are the reasons why I -

Buy my paints in the little 1/4 oz. bottles.
Buy my "oderless" mineral spirits by the gallon.
Paint in the kitchen over a linoleum floor, by the way, those fake grout lines are getting dark under the table.
Buy tons of paper towels.
And blame it on the cats.

... but of course "Future" isn't called "Future" in Australia. Here, in New Zealand, it's not called "Future" either. It's called "Klear". Made by the same people. Smells the same. Works the same. Different name. Cost is about $7NZ, which is about $6.60AU

At 2.99/half ounce at my LHS it figures out at around $765 a gallon.  I used to work in an auto parts store where we sold some pretty high end paint and none of it was that pricey.

When you buy paint in small quantities, the container can cost as much as (or more than) the paint. It's the price you pay for convenience.

Fine so we'll call packaging 50% of price.That brings it down to the much more reasonable $382 / gallon.  Even if a gallon of MM cost $100 dollars to produce, which I find more realistic, it would mean they were spending approximately $2.60 for bottles, margin etc.  I don't find that terribly convenient.  Probably a more pointed analysis is that we aren't buying enough paint to make it's production economically sustainable at lower price level.  So go out and buy more paint people!!!

Here's a suggestion for anyone that paints on a carpetted floor, like I do.

Invest in an office rolling seat carpet protector.  You know, one of those rectangular sheets of thick plastic that protects your carpet from your rolly chair, and makes it easier to roll around in?

It has the side benefit of:
  - helping find dropped parts that are small.
  - making spills clean up more easily.

I have also invested in a 'cheap' $20-30 6'x6' area rug to spread under my work area.  Now, dropping paint or whatnot doesn't worry me any longer.

A bottle of paint is a quarter of an ounce only until you spill it, at which time a gallon of paint pours out!

I worked up this chart a couple of years ago in U.S. dollars.  I'm sure it's mostly increased since then...
