Super Glue Shelf Life
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, August 9, 2003 6:54 PM
I've noticed that no matter how diligent I am in capping my super glue bottle, the glue turns into molasses within six months. This happened to my "Zap-a-Cap" and to my hobby store label glue. Is there any way to prolong the shelf life?
Incidentally, the glue is on my garage workbench, where there is no sunlight.

Best to keep it refrigerated. It will last substantially longer that way.

Just don't add it to the next Chili you make.

ShermanFreak -
Refrigerate the super glue? As you noted, if I'm not careful I could end up with some food that really sticks to my ribs!

Thanks for the recommendation.

Jugman,
I have CA glue more than 5 yrs. old. I bought a lot of it at a real low ball price, when I was heavy into RC flying. I keep it in the refrigerator and still use it to this day..I`m down to a few bottles now.

Great tip, I have had the same problem as Jugman. I never finish a bottle of CA. That has been part of the reason I don't use it more often. Thanks for the great tip, you just saved me a bunch of hastle.

Heres another good idea. I stopped buying specialty CA several years ago for the same reason, it has no shelf life. Find a BIG LOTS store and in the area where they sell cheap tools you may fine super glue with three tubes for a dollar. Get as many as you can and place them in the refrigerator until you need it. When you take the tube from the fridge and use it, wipe the stim off with a tissue and stand it upright in a container. Hopefully this will now allow the liquid to set in the stim and harden up. If it eventually does plug up, throw it away and get another tube. At about .33cents a tube you wont go broke.
Good luck and happy modeling to you. Fred Amos.

LOL I buy Zap a Gap's medium formula for special purposes then for the rest....well Im with Fred just stopped by biglots this weekend picked up 10pkgs(30 tubes) which will last me for quite some time especially considering how thin this stuff is.

This is an obsession of mine. (being of the anal-compulsive syndrome) I may have come up with a partial answer. Here's the theory: what dries out any product is exposure to air, right? Well, we can't totally 100% reseal the tube, but can we keep air away from the opened tube? YES ! Submerge the tube in an appropriate sized container, such as a cigar tube, making sure the opened end is under water! Remember to squeeze the air out of the tube.
Logically that should work, or at least drastically slow down the drying-out process. And I don't care if I could buy the stuff for 30 cents a tube. We are talking principle here!! (see above noted syndrome)

I've had a pet theory for some time that it is actually the absence of air that causes CA to sit up o rapidly. Just a thought. Fred Amos

Although not refrigerated, I work in my basement which is generally cool and the only CA I ever have any problems with are the ones that come in tubes. I usally buy the CA in bottles and place one of the flexible tips on the end and never cap them. I rarely have any trouble other than the periodic tip cleaning...
