Popularity of modeling in the US and UK
Posted by jwb on Tuesday, May 30, 2006 12:32 PM
Since I've gotten back into modeling, I can't get enough of the subject. Whether it be browsing the LHS, reading on the Internet, or reading magazines, I'm hooked.

One thing I've noticed- there seems to be quite a few magazines out of the UK, two directed solely at aviation scale modeling, in fact, that I am aware of. The only US publication about modeling that I've seen is FSM.

I subscribe to FSM because I do think it's the best I've found. So I vote with my wallet, I guess. But I generally pick up 2 or 3 of the other pubs each month because I simply enjoy reading on the subject (and those others are good too.... no knock on them.)

Is scale modeling- particularly aircraft- that much more popular in the UK to support so many magazines? Or are there other factors- cost of publishing, distribution, etc.? Maybe there are others in the US and they just don't have the wide distribution of FSM?

Personally, I'd love to see more magazines simply to enjoy them. Heck, I'd buy them all. (I have to say FSM is a bargain and if you use the forum, throw your support into it by subscribing!)

I know since I work in the publishing industry, FSM probably is happy to be one of few- competition for advertiser dollars is typically tight in any publishing medium.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone had insight into this.

I noticed there are only a handful of magazines dedicated to building models. Most, as you mentioned out of the UK. By the time it lands here where I live, they can easily go for $12 each! Unfortunately for a lot of magazines here in Canada, you don't really save much over having a subscription vs buying it off the news stand. Actually you can get it quicker from the news stand as well! But since I recently "got back" into doing models, I'll probably buy FSM from time to time. Looks like a great publication.

There are several modeling magazines in the US. Fisrt of all, the IPMS does a journal. FSM has a sister publication called Scale Auto. The most popular one dedicated to armor modeling is Military Miniatures in Review (MMiR). Historical Miniatures covers figure modeling.

Squadron.com also sells an English version of the Spanish modeling magazine called Armor Models magazine.

Hey Rob! Almost finished with the P-47. Wink [;)]

I had seen the MMiR, now that you mention it. I'd not seen Scale Auto. I did go back and look at all the sister pubs FMS has, and there are quite a few. Guess I hadn't noticed them being an aircraft modeler.

I believe our hobby is suffering here in the US.  People with time, patience, money, and skills needed for this are becoming harder to come by.  Sadly, this limits the market for scale model magazines.  I wish there were more of them, not that FSM isn't good.  I wouldn't be too upset if we could get more people into this hobby either.

Personally, I would rather have two or three good quality mags than a dozen half-hearted ones. All the mags end up stretching to come up with material that's not been beat one a dozen times already and pretty soon they all have the same articles in one big loop that just continues on every month, every year. The different mags just offset the topics a month or two so that no mag has the same material in any given month as any other.

Ever read a gun rag? They constantly pour over the same thing month after month, most of them saying the same stuff about the same things every month. It gets very old. "Hey, who's got the HK article this month? No, they had it last month. This month they have another AR-15."

I like FSM. A good quality mag that does a fine job of trying to keep things fresh. And it's the only mag I have a subscription to. Between the net and FSM I have all I need. But until I get internet in the bathroom I wish the FSM issues were a little thicker.Shock [:O]Blush [:I]Wink [;)]Big Smile [:D]

You said it brother! I'm hooked as well, much to the dismay of my bank account Wink [;)]

I've noticed the same thing about the magazines. In the past week or so I have picked up copies of Military in Scale, Model Aircraft Monthy and Scale Aviation Modeller - and all seem to be pretty good, but expensive by the time they arrive here. I assumed that scale modeling must have a stronger following in the UK based on the number of magazines published there. Maybe, maybe not eh?

Anyway, I do subscribe to FSM and it is my number one Thumbs Up [tup]

I think FSM is the best because they cover a broad array of topics, but don't tell that to the Sci-Fi guys.  Wink [;)] I'm a longtime subscriber.

MMIR is good, but very hard to find out here and cost $10.

I like Military in Scale since it covers my main modeling interests: armor and planes. However, I only pick up issues that interest me.

Agreed Tigerman MIS (Military in Scale) and SMI (Scale Models International) are excellent publications. However at $10.00 each, that's one less kit per month.
I don't suffer from insanity...I enjoy every minute of it!

Ouch! Military in Scale is $6.25 at my LHS.

Wow, I don't know, my LHS and the local Chapters are just full of modelling mags. Granted, lots from the UK, some from Japan. However, I guess I'm lucky enough that my LHS tends to carry all the FSM sister publications. As for subscriptions, I don't see the point. I renewed this year, and I'm wishing I hadn't. I don't really save any money, and I don't get it faster. I allready know how to assemble tracks, and chuck a pin-vice, so most of the articles in FSM don't really help out too much. Also, I don't like the fact that most of their extreme detail buildups are in the AC section. However, having said that, it is one of the better edited mags out there, and anything catering to the beginner modeler is great. I used to read MMIR, but found the black/white print of pictures to greatly take away from the models themselves. I currently buy TMMI and their new sister publication MMI. They used to be quite pricey, but nowadays, again thanks to a good LHS, the owner has a great deal with the Tamiya distributor, and as such, I get each mag for around $6 CAD. Were I to subscribe, I'd easily pay twice that, if not more.

Good Lord, this is so true. I read a log of gun magazines when I was in high school and college. I even thought that I'd want to write for one someday because that seemed like a really cool job. Eventually I stopped buying them because they said the same darned thing every issue.

The problem with that approach is that eventually the magazines begin to enforce certain standards: after 150 different articles -- all saying the same thing -- on how to customize a Colt .45 auto, those  custom features are now standard on newly built guns of that type. It's almost gotten to the point that a standard 1911A1 with the short trigger, arched mainspring housing, and regular barrel bushing needs to be custom ordered!

The same thing has happened to a certain extent with FSM and other modelling magazines. After 150 articles on weathering airplane models, it's tough to build a clean-looking model without getting a bit of flack from fellow modelers.

Strangely, though, prejudices can also buck that trend. Despite 150 articles in FSM showing very highly detailed 1/72 scale models, kits in that scale still have the reputation for being "not very detailed." Angry [:(!]

Having said that, I have to agree that FSM does a great job of presenting a wide variety of content and viewpoints on building models.

Regards,

-Drew

Yes, we really seemed to get screwed on subscriptions if the mag is from outside Canada. You can get them at the same price, and faster at the local shop or magazine store. I try not to buy from Chapters though, they are too anti-gun. They won't carry gun mags, but they'll gladly carry mags about growing/smoking pot, somewhat smutty stuff, but have lots of books on war. Buncha hipocrites. I rather buy from the local hobby or magazine store. But thats just me.
