A model mobile
Posted by MortarMagnet on Thursday, July 13, 2006 10:55 PM
This one isn't really all that model related, but it is.  I'm going to be building a wall mounted mobile for my baby, which has been confirmed as a boy, using Revell 1:48 aircraft.  They'll get painted in bright colors, not the correct paint schemes.Smile [:)]  Does anyone know where I can get ahold of a slow motor for such a thing?  Also, if I can dig up an audio device to go with it.  I know this is a long one, I really appreciate your help.

Check out the motors people use to rotate Christmas decorations with (this is my second post tonight that mentions Christmas and it's only July for crying out loud!). On the other hand, you could always buy a "real" wall mounted mobile that is available for infants, and alter it to suit. You might want to consider 1:72 scale if you insist on a motor, 1:48 might end up too heavy.

Congrats on the boy! By the way I consider Bare Metal Silver, Tuskegee Airmen Tail Red and Bf-109 Nose Yellow to be quite bright...

So long folks!

 Congrats, MMThumbs Up [tup].
I have a son who is seven, going on eight and I love him sooo much. Enjoy every minute you have with him, especially while he is still little bitty and you can hold him. I miss holding mine like that.Sad [:(]
One caveat, make sure NO little pieces will fall into his crib. You'll learn fast, all these "Daddy" things. Good luck and tell the wife we're happy for her too!!

I've drawn up a pretty strong rig... I'm a worrier.  Once they are painted I was going to coat the planes in varnish.  I've found a 1hp motor that is capable of rotating a Christmas tree... I'm starting to lean towards 1:72, I worry about the wall being able to hold all this.  I just want to get to work on this before he gets here.  I've got a few months yet.  I'm so excited.Smile [:)]

Edit: Just wanted to clarify that the son has not yet been born.  Sonograms have really improved over the years.  It was so neat to see a little baby with all his little bones.  You can see things like brain wrinkles nowadays.  They measure parts of the brain, heart, and some bones.  I was really surprised at the image quality.  He is very clearly a he.

No kidding! I remember our son's 20-week sonogram and it was increadibly amazing.

My son was born in Novmember of last year, so he's nearly 8 months old now. My modeling time was cut pretty short for a few months (and I didn't mind at all!), but things have settled down now.

In any event, Congratuations! Having a child is pretty wonderful. Big Smile [:D]

Hey, thanks,  I hope your son keeps being healthy.  I'm glad to here it didn't take you too long to get back to building.  I don't think I'll mind setting away from it for alittle while... I've had to before.

Drew (& soon to be MortarMagent), hate to burst your bubble, but right now your son is at the Put stage. By that I mean you put him down and he stays there. Soon he will be in the Move stage, where he has discovered legs and how quickly he can move, shortly after that you'll discover how fast he can move too! Then he will be in the Grabbing stage, which is self-explanatory, and not a time to leave out paints, knives, glues or anything else you want to keep drool free. I am told by other parents that the Grabbing stage sometime never goes away. I'm lucky, at 11 & 15 my sons are no longer interested in what I'm doing.

At least I think I'm lucky...

If somehow you can manage to build during these periods, congratulations!

So long folks!

Unfortunately, my son is on the cusp of the move stage. However, I've always been pretty good about keeping dangerous and/or messy things put away when I done with them.

However, I've still got a ton of child-proofing to do. Sad [:(]

Congratulations!
Boys are great! You can actually go to a store and buy stuff that you know is cool!
I have three sons, and while all very different, they all build models with dad. . .when they have time between school, girls, cars, girls, work, girls, sports and did I mention girls?
(One is away at school and called the other day to tell me I could his paints if I needed to. . .I found MY MM aluminum!)
As for the bright colors thing. . .how about a Blue Angels FA18 and a Thunderbirds F16? Pretty bright!
Again, congratulations and enjoy him before he starts eating you out of the house!!
