Gryffon Expo 2006 update
Posted by wulf190 on Saturday, September 2, 2006 2:22 PM

Hi All. Just a little update on the Gryffon Expo 2006. I just updated the website ( http://www.gryffonhobbies.com/expo.htm ) with new information. For those that build OTB, you may be interested to know that the OTB categories have been eliminated. The reason being that many kits today include PE and resin. We feel this is unfair to those that decide to build the more basic kits on the market. Cheers!

I don't understand why it would be unfair.  You should judge a model on what the modeler did with what was in the box.  If he did the best he could do with what was provided, it is just as good as the one that did the same thing with the kit that included PE parts.  A Out of the box category is supposed to be judged that way right?

The real question the judge should ask himself is: "Is it the best the modeler could do considering what was in the box."

No matter where you go ....... there you are.

And if I understand this correctly, I have no chance of getting any reward if I show an out-of-the-box model since I will have to compete with others which will have aftermarket parts and scratchbuilt add-on.  This is unfair.  And this is why there is a "out-of-the-box" category usually.

Yan, with todays kits that include all the aftermarket parts needed for a particular kit, you will still be competing with the same kits even if we had kept the OTB category. Look at some of the kits out there today, the best example is Dragon's new Smart Kit Panther G. It includes everything you need! The OTB categories today are pretty much obsolete unless you start having the regular OTB categories snd then the OTB with extras categories. Makes no sense. If you build good kits, you stand as good a chance as any to place. It's been done many times before and will be done again many more times. Best of luck to you and we hope to see you there! Cheers

Francis, perhaps in the future you could add a "Plastic Only" category to limit use of kits with the goodies built into the box. Heck you could even put a spot in the rules that says "No Scratchbuilding is allowed" if you wanted. Just myMy 2 cents [2c]

Thanks for the suggestion, it is an interesting idea. I have received many email regarding this decision, and as stated in my previous post, I dont really think this decision affects the casual modeler as he will be competing with others in the same conditions anyways. With this in mind, anyone who has attended various shows can testify that on many occasions, OTB models have taken first place over others that included many aftermarket goodies or scratchbuilt details. I'm talking about all plastic construction with absolutly no PE, resin or scratchbuilding included. What it comes down to is the overall assembly and finish of the model. When the modeler makes no mistakes or overlooks certain areas, he pretty much as a probable winner in his hands.

Good to hear!  I may look my models again and register for the show.  Maybe just for the fun of it.
