box art
Posted by DURR on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 8:21 AM

this is a 3 part question

1 on a scale of 1-10 (1=least  10= most) how important is box art to you?

2 why?

3 what kind of boxart do you like best,

a          fantasy type pic or painting

b          pictures of the real subject

c         pics of the model built up

my answer to this is   2 on the scale

because i use books and web for pics

and i prefer pics of the modelbuilt up

1. I'll go with a 2 as well.

2. With the exception of a subject I've never seen before, box art does not influence my decision to buy or build a model. Therefore, it's quite irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

3. I personally prefer paintings of the subject since I do save the box art from every model I've ever built.

Same, I'd go with a 2 maybe 3.  As with Bob, I save my box tops from the kits, especially the older Hasegawa kits with the really slick paintings....

In the figure world, the norm is to have a the painted subject as box art. This is not always a good thing if the painter deoesn't do a great job. My favorite box art was Hasegawas signed artwork of the late 80's and early 90's. There was at least one book of this guy's artwork. Along the same lines is Dragon's and Academy's box art.

I like good box-art, i.e. Tamiya, Hasegawa, and Dragon's Volstad are my faves, but they don't influence my decision to buy that kit.

I like the paintings that those manufacturers put on there as they are suitable for framing. As for pictures of the finished model, it's fine on the side of the box like Dragon.

ONE - Ten for me. This decision is not related to the contents of the kit or brand.

TWO - When I buy shoes/boots, box art is not important, to me. If model kits had boxes like shoes, then that would suck. Box art is very important to me because this is my primary hobby. Box art is an element of this hobby. I've never thrown away a single model kit box since I was a kid. I've kept them all, that I could.

THREE - The old Italeri kit box art of a fully painted and vinetted model always caught my eye. So, I'd say that box art should be of the build up kit in three quarter view in grey primer only on a cutting mat, correctly lit. On the sides of the boxes should be elevation views as well as sprue shots. And of course, scale of the model kit.

i think the box art is quite important

1-5 out of ten

2-the same as SprueOne

3-the images of the finished model, maybe a dio instead of the painting, to make it less plain. in the sides, the sprues, and maybe a short historical reference of the modeled thing (like airfix used to do)

1- Depends. 0 when i want a certen thing without ever seeing a kit of it. 6 when i'm window shoping for a intresting looking kit

2- aside form the fact i like the art itself, it gives life to a model i have no knowlage of.

3- a bit of everything. I like drawn artwork on the top, and a actualy finished model on the side. If it has PE, then a dipection of the parts is nice.

I'd say 0, 'cuz before i buy a kit, i go around and search for reviews and built-up pictures from fellow modeler/reviewers, disregarding how good a box art would look like (Dragon M1A1 AIM for example).  with that said, i do dig those Tamiya box arts... as... i pretty much collect them and get POed when a shipment comes from fricking hongkong wrapped with just ugly green paper with the box all half crushed and damaged, one reason i swore to myself never to buy anything coming from hongkong again.  I love the old matchbox ones too.  I consider them as good as any art prints you see being sold for several hundred bucks, and we get to enjoy some 9X14 art works for free with the kit (though they probably are taken into account for the price).  For question 3 I'd definitely pick A over the rest.  I don't ever remember seeing a single badly drawn boxart from Tamiya.  Dragon's are mixed.  I wonder how long it'd take Trumpeter to catch up.  (not gonna go into aircraft manuf. as there'd be too many to list.)

1- 10 right off the bat.

2- Good boxart (like Revell, Tamiya, Hasegawa, etc.) piques my interest in a kit, and I don't like decieving boxart. This is one reason why I like Revell's boxes. They show zilch, you get zilch. They show a fully loaded plane, you get a fully loaded plane. Unlike what I hear with Hasegawa.

3- Paintings!!!!! I, like many who have posted here, collect the boxart from my kits, so the better looking, the better (duh!).

That would be to bad either. As long as I see no backdrops.

I will say probably a 4, a crappy looking picture won't intrigue me to look into the kit any farther. I know its dumb, but a really cool picture will catch my attention. (Hasegawa's F-18F VFA-103 boxart is cool!) I will say I like fantasy or painting type of boxart. Normally ones that have the painting also have some pics of the built up kit. I don't save them, but like I said, it catches my attention, and that is what sells kits, or at least makes them stand out.

I got a odd situation with a kit now. Bought a 1/35 tamiya king tiger, box art showed what it looked like and that was all i needed. But now i have it just across from my bed and looking at the box art every day is giving me a real itch to build it... Pritty soon i'll have 2 models done and out of the way but i want to do it now!! errrrrr.
