I Need a Lot of Responses; Please Help
Posted by styrene on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 8:10 PM

I am in the process of preparing a seminar for the upcoming IPMS regional contest and convention in Virginia Beach in October.  The title isn't finalized yet, but will be something like "Maintaining Your Hobby Health."  I'll be discussing some of the safety and health aspects of our hobby, and I really need your input to help establish a baseline exposure data model (maybe).

Please answer the following questions.  Comments, of course, are welcome, but please keep them applicable to the questions.

1.  How large is the area where you model? (Example: 12ft. X 8ft. X 8ft.)

2.  Does your modeling area have a window that can be opened?

3.  What scale do you PRIMARILY model in? (1/72, 1/48, 1/35, etc.)

4.  What is your PRIMARY choice of paint & thinner, and brand? (Tamiya acrylic, Testors enamel),

5.  Do you paint with an airbrush?  A rattle can? What percentage of each? (80AB/20RC)

6.  If you use an airbrush, what is the approximate total volume of paint & thinner used (1oz., 50ml, etc.)

Thanks so much in advance for your help.

1. Single Room - 10' x 9' with 8' ceiling.

2. Yes. However, I only open the window to clean it. Otherwise it stays shut. I use a fan and air conditioning.

3. 1/35

4. Model Master Enamels and Model Master Airbrush Thinner.

5. Airbrush and hand brush. 80%/20%

6. Per 1/35 model? Less than one small jar in total (even if using various colors). However, I've used up to 5 full jars of paint on larger (non-primary) subjects.

6. Less than one jar per model

1. 14' X 15' dedicated room

2. Two windows with exhaust fans

3. 1/48

4. Gunze-Sangyo, Tamiya, Polly Scale, Model Master, Testors, Alclad in that order. Use lacquer thinner for both lacquer and enamels, use alcohol and/or windex for acrylics.

5. Airbrush

6. Over what time period? I did a A-20 last weekend and used about a half ounce of paint total for the job and about a quarter ounce of lacquer thinner -- that's a guess mind you.

1. A corner card table in my room.

2. 2 windows that open, but just during the Summer.

3. I generally don't have a set scale, but most of my completd builds were 1/48.

4. Modelmaster Acryl, PollyScale S and Citadel paints.  For thinner I just use tapwater or Windex.

5. Airbrush, but i'm still in the learning stage, so 98% brushing and 2% airbrushing.

6. I try to get the ratio to 3 parts paint to 1 thinner, but I generally eyeball it to the 2% milk consistancy.

1.  How large is the area where you model? (Example: 12ft. X 8ft. X 8ft.)

12'6" x 10' but I have to share the space with my wife's craft table and my home office so probably only a third of that is dedicated to modeling

2.  Does your modeling area have a window that can be opened?

Yes, rarely though.

3.  What scale do you PRIMARILY model in? (1/72, 1/48, 1/35, etc.)

70% 1:48 Aircraft 15% 1:24 Auto 10% 1:35 Armor

4.  What is your PRIMARY choice of paint & thinner, and brand? (Tamiya acrylic, Testors enamel),

Tamiya Acrylic

5.  Do you paint with an airbrush?  A rattle can? What percentage of each? (80AB/20RC)

Airbrush 90% only use RC on Auto bodies 10%

6.  If you use an airbrush, what is the approximate total amount of paint & thinner used?

Hmmm, coverage depends on the model, my ratio is around 60/40 paint to thinner.

So long folks!

6. I usually Go for a 60/40 thinner/paint mixture. I usually get through a bottle of my base color by the time a project is done.

1.  How large is the area where you model?   12ft L. x 10ft W. x 8ft H.

2.  Does your modeling area have a window that can be opened?  No. But I plan to make a spray booth

3.  What scale do you PRIMARILY model in? 1/35

4.  What is your PRIMARY choice of paint & thinner, and brand? Tamiya acrylic and Tamiya Thinner

5.  Do you paint with an airbrush?  A rattle can? What percentage of each? 100% Airbrush

6.  If you use an airbrush, what is the approximate total amount of paint & thinner used? Approximately 1 jar per model and if you're talking about the ratio, it's about 1 part thinner for two part paint.

No matter where you go ....... there you are.

Area.  I'm tucked into one corner of half of my unfinished basement.  The room is quite large, but I stay in a12x20x7 corner.

Windows.  Only one and I can't open it during the winter.  I have an exhaust fan, and a respirator.

Scale. 1/35

Paint and thinner.  Tamiya acrylic and thinner

I use my airbrush about 95% of the time, the rest with a rattle can or brushes.

Ratio.  I eyeball it until it's the consistency of skim milk.

2.   Two windows that open, but I usually don't open them.

3.  1/48 a/c

4.   Model Master paint and thinner.  Clean with lacquer thinner.

5.   100% airbrush

6.   Till it sprays.

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

1)
2 feet by 5 feet (I would appreciate more space though)

2)
Yes, a small one, but a large one would be ideal

3)
1/35

4)
Tamiya acrylics

5)
47% airbrush , 47% brush , 6% rattle can

6)
About one Tamiya acrylic bottle per average-sized model, plus a third of that in thinner.

I'd refine your question 6. What exactly are you asking? The total amount of pain and thinner used, or the paint/thinner ratio?

1.  How large is the area where you model? 10' x 12' room

2.  Does your modeling area have a window that can be opened?  Yes, I also use the huge Pace Peacekeeper Deluxe spray booth, ducted outside through the window.  The window is right in front of my modeling area and is next to the spray booth.

3.  What scale do you PRIMARILY model in? (1/72, 1/48, 1/35, etc.)  I build mostly 1/48 and 1/32 scale aircraft and also 1/35 armor.

4.  What is your PRIMARY choice of paint & thinner, and brand? (Tamiya acrylic, Testors enamel),  I use Tamiya Acrylic for all of my painting.  I use Tamiya Acrylic thinner to thin for airbrushing.  I use Tamiya Primer for all my aircraft projects (generally not on armor).  75% of what I build are aircraft.  I use ordinary household Windex with Amonia to cleanup my Airbrush and paintbrushes.

5.  Do you paint with an airbrush?  A rattle can? What percentage of each? (80AB/20RC)  About 80% of what I paint is with the AirBrush.  I paint small detail with a brush.  20% is Rattle Can for the Tamiya Primer

6.  If you use an airbrush, what is the approximate total volume of paint & thinner used (1oz., 50ml, etc.)  Hmmm... that's a tough one.  I suppose the total is about half of what a jar of Tamiya Acrilic (23ml bottle, so about 10 to 12 ML per plane?) .

1.  How large is the area where you model? (Example: 12ft. X 8ft. X 8ft.)

Not sure 15'x15'x9' Sounds right.  I'm assuming your wanting to know the area of the room and not work surface area, since you seem to be figuring exposure to fumes.

2.  Does your modeling area have a window that can be opened?

No, the windows are trying to fall out and haven't yet been replaced so there is plenty of ventilation, a little cold in winter.

3.  What scale do you PRIMARILY model in? (1/72, 1/48, 1/35, etc.)

No set scale I've got stuff from 1/72 figs to the 1/350 NX Enterprise

4.  What is your PRIMARY choice of paint & thinner, and brand? (Tamiya acrylic, Testors enamel),

Testors 1/4oz and MM, enamel and Acryl, mostly enamel, but I've been replacing used up colors in acryl. I'm better with Acryl anyway.  That's what I use for ceramics.

5.  Do you paint with an airbrush?  A rattle can? What percentage of each? (80AB/20RC)

No AB-95+% brush and <5% RC and I spray outside in the open air when I spray.  Stuff builds up to be sprayed waiting for good weather.

6.  If you use an airbrush, what is the approximate total volume of paint & thinner used (1oz., 50ml, etc.)

No Ab

Can you post your results when you're done with you're, I'm curious?

Come on, guys post and help him out!!

 2. it's got three windows, but the workbench is away from all of them to protect against sun bleaching. I probobly should change it around though.

3. Anything really.

4. Tamiya all the way

5. Got a badger.....something...forgot the number. I mostly use rattle cans anyway, id say about 10AB/90RC

1.  Build area (#1) is 11' x 12', but is adjacent to a 6'x8' area (#2) which in turn is adjacent to another 7'x8' area(#3); no wall separates area 1 from area 2, and no wall separates area 2 from area 3, but a wall does separate area 1 from area 3.  Areas 2 and 3 are never used for modeling, and ceilings in all areas are 8'.  Painting occurs in closet 1.5' x 3' x 8' using an Artograph 1520 (booth's in the closet, I am not), but without outside venting.

2.  Yes
3. 1/48
4.  Paints: Testors enamels (both Model Master and square bottles).  Thinner: Low odor mineral spirits (current container is Klean Strip brand)
5.  Airbrush 100%
6.  Total amount of paint and thinner: including clean-up, a little under 2 fluid ounces per spray session, about 2 sessions per month (well, that's the goal now that I'm almost set up again after moving).

For what it's worth, I also usually use Testors tube glue and Bondo spot glazing putty in the 1 lb. tube as a filling material.

1.  How large is the area where you model? (Example: 12ft. X 8ft. X 8ft.)

12'x10'x8' My bedroom doubles as my work area. I am mostly confined to a 6'x2' desk, which is usually only about half covered with stuff Big Smile [:D]

2.  Does your modeling area have a window that can be opened?

Yes, 2

3.  What scale do you PRIMARILY model in? (1/72, 1/48, 1/35, etc.)

1/48 and 1/32

4.  What is your PRIMARY choice of paint & thinner, and brand? (Tamiya acrylic, Testors enamel),

Testors ModelMaster enamel. I use orderless mineral spirits for enamels and 91% iso alcohol for acrylics.

5.  Do you paint with an airbrush?  A rattle can? What percentage of each? (80AB/20RC)

Both. 80% airbrush, 10% can, 10% brush for those pesky details you just can't mask.

6.  If you use an airbrush, what is the approximate total volume of paint & thinner used (1oz., 50ml, etc.)

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you want here.

1.  How large is the area where you model? (Example: 12ft. X 8ft. X 8ft.)

Difficult to say, as my basement is partitioned. My home above is 875 Square feet, so the basement is considerably smaller.

2.  Does your modeling area have a window that can be opened?

Yes. Three.

3.  What scale do you PRIMARILY model in? (1/72, 1/48, 1/35, etc.)

Scratchbuilder. Scale is relative

4.  What is your PRIMARY choice of paint & thinner, and brand? (Tamiya acrylic, Testors enamel),

I use model enamels, hobby acylics, and spray paints. All sprays are done outdoors

5.  Do you paint with an airbrush?  A rattle can? What percentage of each? (80AB/20RC)

I use both. 80-90 percent spraycan. 10%  airbrush

6.  If you use an airbrush, what is the approximate total volume of paint & thinner used (1oz., 50ml, etc.)

A small amount. I regret that I don't have a figure- Less than a standard small Testors Jar, FWIW.

Thanks so much in advance for your help.

My pleasure. Glad I could help.
