Burnt…Can Only Blame Myself
Posted by Model Grandpa on Friday, October 13, 2006 10:31 PM

Thought I had won a factory sealed limited edition resin 1/48 scale aircraft kit on (insert favorite online auction site here) for $21.50.  The kits manufracturer has the kit on sale right now for $29.95, thought I saved a couple bucks.  Received the kit in a timely manner but after I opened the shrink-wrapped box I found part bags that had been cut opened, part missing including the complete “pit” and the decals gone.  Went back and read the description and it didn’t say the kit was factory sealed, didn’t say anything about the kit at all, just a nice photo of a nice looking shrink-wrapped kit.   Says that if you have questions to email and the kit is sold as is.  So I guess I should of read the description closely and emailed the guy (not on my Christmas list) about the actual condition of the kit so I can only blame myself.  I'm not an (insert favorite online auction site here) noob either.

So if your buying on (insert  favorite online auction site here) please beware and know what your getting.

That sucks Dan. Too bad the jerk doesn't have the morals to just say missing stuff or incomplete. Some people will do anything for a buck eh. Unfortunatly you had to learn this the hard way. I never buy from that auction site as you never know what the seller will pull. Well actually we do, and buy there anyway knowing that these things do happen. Keep your spirits up, could have been worse for sure. Have a good brew and forget about it.

I don't know how many hands this kit has been through, I believe that the person I actually got it from didn't know it was a re-sealed kit.  Just sucks that someone in the line had to do it.  I am going to contact the manufracturer and see if they can help, probably not but worth a try anyways.  I may just buy another kit from them and I'll have a few spare parts, which might not be a bad thing as this will be my first attempt at a full resin kit.  I'm pretty much over it now, I have a hard time staying angry nowadays.  Shoot, I live with in range of a North Korean missle here on the west coast, not going to worry about a silly model kit for too long.  Lesson learned, time to move on.

Got a nice sealed J8M1 and sealed Me. 263 from JPH in the mail last week so its not like I don't have something to work on.  Kind of into a rocket powered aircraft faze right now.

I believe I came close to getting burned recently on a RM solid nose 8 gun B-25J.  The description said that the seller "believed" the kit was complete.   The photo of contents was taken as to not verify what was included..  I asked the seller to photo all the sprues and decals or simply just inventory what was included and email me and if it indeed was complete I would bid..  Of course I didnt get a email.  No emai,l no bid... I still want that kit though.

The one thing you have to do is read carefully when you bid. Its too bad that happened to you.

So far, (knock on wood) I've been very lucky in my dealings in web auctions - In fact a time or two I felt I came out ahead. Example: I have carried a partially completed Airfix PBY around for several moves, always intending to finish it even though it had a bunch of lost/broken parts.  So when that kit appeared in a web auction advertised as "believed to be largely complete but for parts only" I bid on it. 6 bucks including shipping - when it arrived and I opened it, I found two complete, unstarted kits in the box.
Nowadays, I don't do web auctions (I think its been a couple of years since I made a bid) cause there are too many people trying to make a living at it, too many people sniping, and entirely too many people trying to get money for nothing.  And too many people willing to pay ridiculous prices for certain items (which generaly puts the item out of my reach). So now I haunt the flea markets (Airfix Lanc, complete in sealed box - $5), Yard sales, local consignment auctions (largely for tools, but I've picked up the occasional kit or model rr items) and of course the Hobby Lobby 50% off sales

I've been acquiring kits from unmentioned auction site for years without any problem however I do always check out the feedback on the seller before bidding. If I see things I don't like from previous customers then I stay away.

Don't blame eBay for the actions of one particular seller. Also do not blame yourself, although on eBay it is a lot of "Buyer Beware".

as living legend said  the seller believed that the kit was complete.

many people on that place are not modelers they just aquire some kits and have no desire to build  they look in the box with 200 pcs and say hey looks all there  to me

try it again (with a different seller of course) you won't be disappointed again

I echo all the sentiments stated above.  Certainly the auction site can't be held liable for idiot sellers.

Truth be told, I've had more worse experiences with Amazon than with Ebay and my Ebay purchases outnumber Amazon's by 3-1....
