Want to build it, can't find it...
Posted by buildit on Thursday, November 16, 2006 8:16 PM

I'm pretty new to the site, but it looks like a good place to share the hobby, find answers, and learn some things.  A cumulative pool of knowledge, growing exponentially....what better place to find what we seek?  Bow [bow]     And wouldn't you know it....I have questions!!!   LOL

This subject could easily apply to any type of kit (cars, trucks, aircraft, et al...) but in my particular case it's cars.  In general, if you had a specific car or plane in mind that you would very much like to create a scale representation of, and if the usual sources of kits did not offer one that you could find, what would be your next move?  By "usual sources" I'm referring to local hobby shops, on-line modeling stores, popular kit manufacturer's web sites, etc.

Are there perhaps any "obscure" sites or shops I may not be aware of?  I'm not necessarily too internet savvy so my searches may have been lacking from "poor input".   Perhaps some "discontinued" warehouse somewhere??  Or should I just get over it and move on....LOL

Any input appreciated!!

Try posting on the autos forum. I think you'll get more and better responses there.

Although I build armor, I've had the same situation come up. Generally, I'll do Yahoo searches (I prefer them over Google, but the choice is yours) using linked search terms. These types of searches can tell you 1) whether a kit was ever produced, 2) if the kit is available anywhere, and 3) other potentially useful information about the subject.

When I want to find out if a kit is available, I'll make sure to search like this:

"1/35 scale"+model+"name of subject"

I'll then narrow down the search by adding further "+" terms once I'm getting close to what I want.

Hope this helps...

Howdy fellow hoosier! Sign - Welcome [#welcome] Normally if I know a kit was made of a given subject, and its out of production, I will try Ebay. You can usually find something on there, but you might have some luck at a hobby store, most will keep kits until they sell, unlike online retailers that don't offer them anymore once they are discontinued. What are you looking for, somebody on here might be able to help you out with locating it.

P.S. What part of the corn field are you from?

Some valuable insight, for sure.  Gives me a few directions to pursue.  Thanks!

Hey there eizzle....good to see other Hoosiers on the site.  Specifically, being a looong time fan of the Wood Brothers #21 NASCAR team (since about 1968) I'd very much like to build some of the cars they have run over the years.  I have a few diecasts from the last few years, and I found and built the Polar Lights kit of the Cyclone driven by Cale Yarborough, and the same with the T-Bird from circa 1981-82 driven by Neil Bonnet, but haven't had any luck finding any kind of kit I could build into my favorite car, a 1970-71 Mercury Cyclone.

Years ago (back in the mid-late '70's) I had a kit of this very car that I had built, but somewhere over the years it disappeared.  I'm not sure now who made this particular kit, but it may have been MPC.  If I can just find a kit of any Cyclone/Montego of this body style I think I can turn it into at least a fair representation of the stock car they ran so successfully back then.  It's looking like a pretty long shot at this point, but I don't give up too easily.

P.S.  I'm just east of the 4,358th corn field on the left....LOL   Actually, I'm in Logansport, which isn't saying much 'cause there really isn't much here!

Thanks again...
