Sorry Eizzle, You made me do it. Laugh [(-D] ROFLMBO!!!!

But dont feel bad bro. I'm in the same boat as you are and my wife goes crazy when I talk about models because she doesnt understand the technical aspect of them even if I tried to explain it she just isnt interested.

I understand AM... I would have done it to you if I had the chance...

I got to give mine credit, she at least looked up the Tomcat and SuperHornet and fed me some line off of the page she found for them... and then went duh, everybody knows that! Silly girl! Hey, ya gotta give them credit for at least not griping when we do work on them!

I'm going to try to build more than I buy. I really need to work on being more patient. And the number one thing is to stop feeding the carpet gremlins! I'll do what ever I can to starve the little  buggers out!

Finish more, ruin less, and keep the crap pile small would be my resolutions.  The latter has already been broken.  I'm targeting one finished, decent model per month.

zokissima -

What I pictured in my mind's eye from what you said, is that you are going to create a diorama and eventually encase it with a wood-and-glass top (and sides) so it is a coffee table with a diorama inside the top.  Is that basically what you plan on doing?  I think it's absolutely brilliant!!!  A model display, useful furniture, and discussion piece - all rolled into one!

Bow [bow]

We will, of course, require many photographs so that we can adequately follow this ingenious project.

Well, for me its simple. For several years now, I've been planing a rather large WWII German railway yard dio. This is the year I start it. In a couple of weeks I'm going to cut the wood for the creation of the base. Ultimately it is going to be a coffee table. Its about 56 inches long by 29 inches wide. Yep, its big.

Kolschey,

I got some nice shelves this weekend at Home Depot for the same reason - to bring order to my cellar!  They're pretty nice - and sizable too.  They fit together without screws and supposedly can hold quite a bit of weight per shelf.  I like them so much I'm going back to get one or two more sets - they cost maybe $50 for a 5-shelf setup, 3 feet wide by 6 feet high.

Clean up my basement!!!

...Just the other day, I went to Home Depot and bought a whole pile of storage separators and other organizers so that I can finally put things in order. I believe that arranging things properly will be the single best thing I can do to ensure my future productivity.

A slight update. I told her about this thread, so she looked up the definitions online for the Hornet and Tomcat and IM'ed me with them, and then puts "Duh, everybody knows the difference between them" I gotta give her credit for that!

She doesn't understand and to tell ya the truth, sometimes I get the feeling she doesn't care all that much, but she does pretend to listen, and looks at the pics that I show her and gives me a "wow, cool" Is that the tomcat or the Hornet? Which is usually followed by a disgusted "Its the TOMCAT WOMAN"!!!!

Shes a keeper, she wants me to build her a M1 Abrams so she can paint it with flowers and kittens on it... to each their own I guess... but when I see the Marines driving that around, I'm moving to Iraq!!! Big Smile [:D]

My resolution is simply to start building again!

And of course that requires certain preparatory steps, such as setting up a work area and obtaining necessary supplies (which may or may not include beer).

We got an addition put on the house a few years ago, and at the very end of the addition we included what was supposed to be a workroom for me.  It's about 6 feet by 12 feet or so.  We still call it the workroom, but now it's occupied by a rather large treadmill, a small couch, the cats' litter box and food, a TV and my son's video games.  So much for a workroom, huh?

But I will persevere!  The boy's only 2 years away from college, so if I have to wait that long to reclaim what is rightfully mine, then so be it.  In the meantime I'll be down in the cellar where nobody can bother me.

And Colin, the History Channel last night showed the Modern Marvels episode on the development of the Tomcat.  I thought highly of it before, but I am in total awe now!  More than 30 years old, and it could still hold its own today.

Colin,

If she doesn't understand the total superiority of the F-14 Tomcat, you may want to rethink getting married! Laugh [(-D]

Actually, if she'll put up with you talking about it, she's definitely a keeper. [:D ]

To hopefully finish more kits than I have started! To clean my airbrush more often, and try not to bore my fiancee to death with why the Tomcat is better than the Super Hornet Big Smile [:D]

Modeling New Year Resolutions
Posted by Lufbery on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 3:05 PM

Hi all,

I know it's a bit late, but what news year's resolutions have you made for modeling in 2007 ?

Here are mine:

  1. Build more! I finished one model last year and got halfway through another. My son is now almost 14 months old, so caring for him is not so intense as it was six months ago, and I'll be graduating with my master's degree in May (I'm in school part-time while working full-time). The result should be that I'll have more time for modeling. Smile [:)]
  2. Don't buy any more kits. I did pretty well with this resolution last year. My stash is at 21 kits and I want it to shrink, not grow. I know we joke about it a bit on this board, but buying kits is a lot easier than building them.
  3. Focus on fundamentals and build mostly out of the box. I'm doing a lot better with gluing seams, cleaning them up, painting, and decaling. But, there's plenty of room for improvement. I would rather focus on building a nicely-finished OOB model than try to build a super-model with a ton of aftermarket resin and PE that is not finished well.
  4. Try new techniques. While this seems to contradict focusing on fundamentals, trying one or two new techniques on each model is challenging and fun. They key is to not get carried away.
  5. Finish the hull of the wooden ship kit I'm working on. I got started on a semi-scratchbuilding practicum, but my work stalled. The stall was partially because of the birth of my son and demands on my time from school, but it was mostly because working with wood, on a ship kit, is very new to me. I'm excited about the kit, but almost every task needed to build it is new to me.

I've realized over the past couple of years that I've been back in the hobby that I won't be able to build kits that look as fantastic as what I see in FSM and on this forum until I've gained the experience to do so. There's no substitute for experience.

I know that's obvious, but it helps to remind myself of this fact from time to time. Cool [8D]

So, what resolutions do you folks have?

Regards,

-Drew
