Modeling "Getaways"?
Posted by flynavy1958 on Saturday, February 10, 2007 5:26 PM

My wife recently found a three-day "getaway" for her stitching hobby, where participants go off and talk shop and stitch together.

I was wondering if such "getaways" exist for our hobby?  Would be nice to talk shop, build, and compare notes, etc.  A quick search of the Internet did not yield much, but was wondering if anyone here had heard of such a thing?

I've heard of those for other crafts. Not sure about modeling, though. If in fact they did, I'm not sure I would be one to participate. While I very much enjoy forums such as this, discussing and sharing the hobby we all love, and the friendships formed along the way, the actual act of the building itself has always been a very private affair for me....sort of a getaway in its own right I suppose.

My local IPMS club runs a work shop on Saturdays where guys can chat and work on kits. They also provide workspace, lights, and some modeling supplies donated by club members.

I guess if you go to one of the major shows (AMPS, IPMS Nationals) that last for several days, there are normally seminars during the shows and some guys bring their modeling tool boxes with them to work on kits in hotel rooms.

It seems a strange idea to me. I model to get away from people, their hatred, callousness and ignorance. Involving other people in the process would ruin it for me.
Look at these people, these human beings; consider their potential! From the day they arrive on the planet, blinking, step into the sun, there is more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than... no, hold on. Sorry, that's The Lion King. But, the point still stands... leave them alone! -- The Tenth Doctor

although the seminar part is cool. we can talk about how to do this or that but when there is someone in front of you and you see first hand a technique (such as applying zim to afv) some of us  (like me) have to be shown how to rather than written how to it makes thing clearer

btw Agamemnon i bet you work in retail too

I am with Agamemnon on this. I use it as a get away. From the bad news of today, the Middle East, guns, and everything else. I just goto bad news of Yesterday, 1939-45. I just let my mind wander over to that period of time. I'm still waiting for it to come back. Propeller [8-] Please don't get me wrong, I like learning from you guys, you all make me laugh, and teach me new things without wanting anything in return, but a laugh.

I see your points of view.

And I agree to a certain extent but I gotta tell ya, if you find the right guys to hang with then its actually a pretty good time.

I meet with a couple of friends in a basement once a month and we bring the latest projects that were working on and its pretty relaxing.

But, its not for everyone.

IPMS Regionals in the USA usually last two days over a weekend.  The IPMS-USA Nationals are four-day events.  Local chapters usually have a one-day annual contest.

Our Chapter has a monthly meeting (first Tuesday) and a monthly Saturday half-day get-together of some sort.  Usually it's a coffee klatch at a member's home.  Last month it was a silent auction of a deceased modelers' estate.  The widow was flabbergasted by how the group helped her dispose of the stash she had been worrying about for over a year, and also by the money she received.  Next Saturday we're doing a group build session at one of the area hobby shops.

It's a great group, fun to be around.

I'd be afraid if I "got away" for three days I'd get no building done- just lots of catching up on sleep and Sportscenter! Wink [;)]

The only thing I'm wondering is ... how do you get your build from one place to the other - and back - without any damage, or losing anything?

even though I absolutely love modelling, I cannot stand more than four hours of it at once... you have to remember, no matter how fat and heavy I may be, I am still a teenager with boiling blood and the lust for action and metal Big Smile [:D]

I guess what I'm trying to say is that although I would like it, I would probably spend my time doing other things Smile [:)]

alumni, it's pretty easy actually.

You have to do just a little preperation and put the model (depending on what stage of the build your in) in a small box with the basics of what you need.

The guys have whatever else we might need.

It can be a pretty portable hobby.

Like many others I prefer some degree of solitude when I'm modeling.  I'm not good at multi-tasking and trying to carry on any kind of discussion or conversation while trying to work on a build would probably result in either little progress or a really screwed up mess! LOL   I need to focus when building, and would probably be afraid that someone would constantly point out how wrong I'm doing something.  But that's just me....

My getaway is when me and my best mate go off to the UK nats once a year. We stay over and have a good night out and meet up with lots of folks we know. Its a good fun weekend.Thumbs Up [tup]

Other than that, my personal getaway is my workshop, I can sit there and play with kits to my hearts content and totally escape from life for an hour or so.
