Central Alberta Modellers Roll Call
Posted by shermanfreak on Monday, September 15, 2003 7:07 PM
Hey fellow Albertans,

Since my post the other day in the Armour Forum about meeting one of the members for an afternoon of plastic talk, a couple of other members have spoken up and said they too are in Alberta.

So okay .... how many others are there on the forums that are from the Calgary - Red Deer - Edmonton corridor and surrounding areas ...... stand up and be counted.

Who knows maybe we can plan to have a group plastic chat one of these days in our own neoighbourhood.

I just put a similar suggestion in my reply about hobby shops ...
I'm in Beaumont and I'm up for a Saturday lunch somewhere.

Ok ... so far we have Smith M, B.Le Cren, and upnorth all in the Edmonton area.
Myself in Red Deer and no checkins from Calgary yet but it is still early.

Thanks for the info on the Edmonton shop scene, it will really come in handy.

Saturday lunch will be great Bruce, we'll give this thread some time to build and then find a location suitable to all. Smith M .... you game for a Saturday get together.

Seems like it is we four for lunch ...

Robert, you are furthest from Edmonton. Do you want to come right into the big city or meet somewhere in the middle, like Leduc or Westaskiwin?

If we go to Wetaskiwin Bruce ..... we could go over and check out the Reynolds Museum .... not much for Armour but they have some wingy thingies there.

The Reynolds museum is an excellent idea. I've toured them several times and always something new to see.

I don't suppose this counts, but my wife went to the Winter Olympics (she's a member of the Zamboni family of ice-re-surfacer fame) and she had a fabulous time while I minded the kids. And I encouraged her to go.. I am an ex-Canadian who spent some time in Alberta and loved your province.Your people have all the characteristics that Americans prize: pride, independence, optimism, morality. Now get rid of Quebec, join with the USA in a partnership for the beginnings of a united North America, and the sky's the limit!

Grande Prairie here.

I get to Edmonton relatively often, but don't think I'll make the trip for a lunch!

Unless I combine it with plastic shopping, of course.. Hmmm.,..

And both of you are more than welcome to join us on our "lunch meeting" if you are in the neighbourhood.

Tony .... and don't think that there are a few people hear that agree with your statements on separation.

Speaking of plastic shopping, I was by Universal Hobbies near Churchill Square today but there they were gone! Phone messaging still works though.

Does any body know if they moved or just went under?

Is Universal Hobbies a good hobby shop? I get most of my modeling supplies from either Kites and Other Delights or a small place off the Yellowhead near a McDonalds, but they don't have a very good selection of armor models, or aftermarket accessories.

They seemed to have a balance of things, something of everything, but they were not a huge shop so the selection was sometimes limited. They did have after market accessories. To be honest, being right down town, they were not my first choice but I would sometimes go and browse on lunch hour.
I hadn't been by in many months and just noticed this week that they were closed.
Don't know if they moved or shut down ...

Universal shut down about a year or so ago.

The owner decided to shut it down after his family commitments were demanding more of his time than he could give to the shop.

I do miss Universal, they were small but they did make the most of the space they had.

How does November 1 sound to everybody. It's a Saturday and it is past Smith M's licence day.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it. I'm having one of those times where work is going nuts and things outside work are starting to pile up more than I like them to, so I really have to be attending to some of it soon.

Hope it goes well for those of you who make it. :-)

Saturday November 1 is good for me. I'm looking forward to meeting you guys.

Shall we say noon at the Reynolds Museum in Wetaskiwin? Meet by the main lobby desk, that way people can look around earlier if they want or whatever?

Can someone bring a digital camera for a forum picture? I don't have one.

SmithM:
Not to jinx you or anything, but where are you and maybe myself or someone else can pick you up if necessary? I am in Beaumont but could drive to Mill Woods or nearby.

Speaking of cars, I am going to take some time later and look around the lots there; my son had an accident, 100% not his fault and he's ok, but the car is gone.
