Attending a model show
Posted by MrKipling on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 9:50 AM
Part of the fun of scale modelling is the chance to attend a model show. You will find many others who share an interest with you and this is an opportunity to develop new contacts.

When you attend a local or national model show, here are some points to consider to allow you to get more enjoyment out of the event.

Read up on the event ahead of time. If you learn in advance what activities are scheduled, you won't miss something that might interest you.

By making a checklist of things you want to do and noting the times of banquets, seminars and swap meets (along with other events that are not time specific), you can prioritize your schedule.

Prepare a list of models and accessories that you intend to purchase. Much like grocery shopping on an empty stomach, if you are not careful you can get caught up in the excitement and buy way too much stuff.

Don't take more money than you are willing to spend and don't change your mind once you get there.

Hold off on making your purchases too early. Some dealers offer show specials and prices can vary widely between vendors. Take the time to view all the displays before making any purchases. Don't wait too long though, as items you wish to purchase can disappear rapidly.

Some events are more family oriented than others. If you do take your family, remember that they may not share your enthusiasm and plan some time in the trip to be able to do something that they will enjoy also.

If you go to any seminars or demonstrations, take notes. You are there to learn, write it down and you will remember it better.

Take a camera. The pictures you take will really help you remember the show later.

Most importantly - relax and have fun.

Sound advice on all points.  I always have a good idea in mind when hitting the vendor area of what I'm looking for.  If I don't find it then I let myself go a little.  But always within a preset spending limit, and never take credit cards, only cash.  I never take the family though.  The only show I've been to that has 'other activities' is at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo and my wife simply has no interest in aviation, and my daughter is too young to get into it.  The only hope is to find another activity locally for them and most of the time my wife would rather stay home and work on some project or another and let me go have my fun.  I love my wife.

I've been fortunate enough to attend numerous shows/competitions/flea markets from Ca-to-NJ-to-Fl. I agree with you all to have a plan, take cash(helps with the haggling besides identity theft) and attend the workshops.

NOTE: as much as I would like to meet fellow forum members at these shows I have to hide my attendance. Why? I am the biggest magnetic of inconsiderate model show jerks, i.e. no matter what I'm doing or where there is always someone who nose dives infront of me...even at the water fountain. I dread the thought of having a Forum companion suffer any of my bad luck. I take aspirin and deep breaths often.

I finally made it to a big show, Atlanta '06, and my head was just spinning with all the models displayed. If that wasn't enough the room next door had a zillion kits for sale, able to finger all the AM products, get updated info on new releases. WOW!

Hi Brian

I know what you mean. We do tend to meet a collection of highly individual, often verbose and awkardly odiforous people at the get togethers. Luckily this weekend I got the chance to attend a great show at a large memorial park with this enormous grey ship named after a State (GREAT SHOW MOBILE GUYS!!!) and the air park, battleship tours etc were avialable, but not really close to any "other" family activiites really close by.

Also, another piece of advice that first timers to shows, or to those attending a local show after only attending a Nats---take a small pocket flashlight.  Some of the meeting and fraternal halls are not the best lit. I rememmber my very first contest was in a Holiday Inn bandquet room with recessed sconce lighting. A MAGLIGHT would have been helpful!  Whatever you do, talk to people, talk tothe vendors, thank the crews for all the hard work that go into putting on a contest and HAVE FUN
