LOL yes it can be deafening sometimes.  Wait til it starts pulling at your pants leg or shoelaces.

I find that a curious kitten does wonders at finding missing parts as long as they are too big to swallow.  The teeth marks are fixable.

Knowing my luck, I would get one of those plastic office chair pads, the parts would hit it ... and bounce off into the carpet! But it might have saved me the $70 I had to spend to get some very bright yellow paint removed from the carpet ...

I also have one of the plastic carpet protector under my desk - it has already saved me from numerous spills and smaller splats. 

I've found a way to cheat the carpet moster nearly every time.  (I think I read about it here or in FSM).  I bought one of the small, rechargeble hand-vacs.  I happened to get it on sale at Wal-Mart for about $10.00. (Dirt Devil 15.6 volt model).  I keep it plugged in near my modeling desk, and after I've dropped a piece and looked for it, had my wife search for it, as well as anyof the kids who happen to be home, I take the hand-vac and start sweeping it over the entire area around my desk.  Only takes a few minutes.  I then very carefully empty the contents onto a small, clean plastic cutting mat, and 99.5% of the time - there is the piece!  The hand-vac is then in an emptied state and ready for the next episode of "Johnny Clutz".

I rarely lose parts to the carpet monster. Hard to when you have a habit of somehow getting them glued to your fingers, forehead, thighs, etc.

I have one of the heavy-duty carpet protectors under my table and chair that I work from. I have the carpet in there still, i think I will leave it until I get ready to sell the house then Ill throw down some laminate to pretty it up. Half of my spills are on the protector, half off....and I find that the protector actually catches parts and small tools (drill bits, etc) under the edge of the protector! 

Yep, ive got some great stains going on that carpet!

It amazes me that people have carpeting in their workrooms—of course, some may have no other choice. I've spilled too much solvent, paint, and glue—usually in disasterous ways (The phone or doorbell rings just as you start to decant some lacquer thinner. Startled, you spread lacquer thinner to the ceiling.)—to even consider it. And then, there's the carpet monster.

There is a solution that may save your rug, and your parts. Office supply stores carry heavy, clear vinyl floor mats that go over carpet to make it easier to roll desk chairs and protect the carpet from severe wear in those areas. Putting one of these under your work area will help starve the carpet monster, and protect the carpet from the slings and solvent of outrageous modeling. Not to mention, protecting your damage deposit if you are a renter.
