Other things in life modelling helps with?
Posted by IanIsBored2000 on Thursday, July 19, 2007 4:46 PM

Just wondering if anyone one has seen improvements in other things in life because of modelling?  Maybe more patience, a steadier hand?  I've noticed three.

1. Better historical knowledge.  When I cam into the hobby a year ago at 14, I couldn't tell you one difference between a Thompson and a Sherman.

2. More creativity.  After building tons of scratchbuilt dioramas and little bits here and there, I look at everything with new posibilities.

3. Last but not least, this hobby has helped me lighten my wallet on multiple occasions.

So what about you?  Just curious.

4. Better hand-eye cordination from adding or painting small detail.

helps me with problem solving,my job can be overwhlming at times but i think that in part to modelling i'll break down my problem into smaller components then fix it up from there. another truthful answer is it gets me to interact with other people(once a month club meeting)as i'm perfectly content to sit at home and get fat.hope you dont fall into that trap young person

we're modelers it's what we do

Amen to that! Well, the more friends and more relaxed part, anyway.

Well, as a modeler, I've got lotsa toys and I'm good with my hands... therefore my lovelife has benefited greatly...

On the serious side, I know that this is wholly dependant upon the individual and their skills, natural or developed, but the techniques used in painting and weathering a model can be applied to a number of other things.

For example, over the years we've had a buncha decorative crap in our yard such as barrels, wishing wells, and wind mills and such. Often times stuff like that looks better if it appears to be old and beat up a bit... rustic, some might say. Well, whenever we get something new, I'll often 'weather' it so that it fits in with the other stuff we've got. Word gets around a neighborhood pretty quick sometimes, and next thing I know, I'm doing this kinda stuff for other folks... and not for free in most cases. So that's one way modeling has affected my non-modeling life...

It gets me plane rides and likker when I build for other people.  And it gives me tools to get some jobs done around the house.  Does the booze make me a professional model builder?

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.
