Armor/Aircraft Model Scales
Posted by JoeU on Saturday, September 1, 2007 3:31 PM
I was sitting at the bench the other day and started thinking (sometimes I do that). I've decided to try to build through Tamiya's entire 1/48 scale armor and military vehicle line as a long term project. One of Tamiya's major selling points for these kits is that they can be combined with 1/48 aircraft in dioramas. So I was thinking and I realized that both aircraft and armor are widely available in 1/72 scale and then again in 1/48. But the next standard scale for each is 1/35 for armor and 1/32 for aircraft. Why the small difference in scale? Why not pick one scale and make both types of kits in that scale? Don't know if anyone knows the reasoning for picking those particular scales, but I just thought it was curious.

1/48 scale was used by Aurora way back in the 1960 for their line of tanks and also by Bandai in the 1970s. Back then, most kits were built to box scale and individual companies released kits in their own standard scale.

Revell did armor kits in 1/40 scale.

Renwal did armor kits in 3/8" scale which worked out to 1/32 scale.

Monogram did 1/35 then moved to 1/32.

Tamiya did 1/50 scale then moved to 1/35 and also produced motorized 1/48 scale kits. Their 1/35 scale kits set the standard that became the industry standard.

They do that to tick us off. I am a 1/35 armour builder (killer), I wanted to do a diorama with armour and an aircraft together, but alas you know the story.

On the desk, 2 Revell Blue Angel F-18's, Tamiya British Quad gun tractor, Tamiya Morris Mini

IMHO, 1/32 and 1/35 are close enough to use together in a diorama. The difference would probably not be visible.

But there are not enough armor/figure/vehicles in 1/48, not enough aircraft in 1/32 1/35 scales either.  would love to see at least one common scale for both aircraft and armor.
