As David says, double boxing is the way to go.  First, make sure the model is secured and can not move around in the inner box.  This can be done many ways.  I have used packing peanuts, styrofoam, newspaper, etc.  Then, close up the inner box and suspend it in the middle of the outer box with packing peanuts on all sides.  I have shipped many models this way, mostly Via USPS and did mark them as Fragile, and had no real issues with breakage.

Good luck.

No doubt about that!  I shipped a customers helicopter, double boxed, reinforced, you name it.

the first box had been crushed, but the second was fine due to the layer of peanut foam.  too bad the helicopter inside had broken free of its mountings! *but the skids were still attached to the fueselage!!!*

Any form of describing the kit as being dainty or breakable assures the UPS crew will kick it that much further!!  What can Brown crush for you today?

I shipped all my other stuff FEDEX no problem. I sent my 1/35 blackhawk exactly as you described inside of foam cut to shape with the doors anddoor guns taken off, rotors seperate, and that was inside one of those cheap plastic storage containers, inside of another box. overkill but it arrived perfect.  I go with FEDEX over UPS any day of the week!

Oh, how true!!!

That is why I would personally opt to ship it with FedEx or UPS AND have it properly insured. That way, if someone in the chain decides to "get cute" with the box, at least some money will come out of the deal.

Just my 2 cents...

I was debating about that.  I have this clear mental image of the box being punted, passed and kicked all 900+ miles from here to VA.  If I had the time I'd drive it down there myself but such is not the luxury I have.

Thanks for the tips!

My favorite methode of transporting models is bij fixating on a piece of styrofoam.

For a SH-60 I would leave of the rotor and make holes for the wheels in the styrofoam. Then put the helo on and fixate it with cocktail sticks. There has to be no movement possible. Then cover is in buble wrap and make sure that it sits thightly in the box.

Hi gang!

A co-worker of mine is having me build an SH-60 Sea Hawk in 1/72 for her hubby who flies them.  Problem:  I live in Wisconsin.  They live in Virginia.  Has anyone ever shipped one of their models AND have it arrive in darned near one piece before?  If so, what are you hints, tips, secrets, advice, etc.  I'm wondering if I should carve out a piece of foam to the shape of the helo or should I put it in bubble wrap and then surround it with foam peanuts.  I've never shipped anything so fragile before so any advice would be more than welcome!

Thank you in advance!

Eric
