Do you 'model', 'scale model' or 'build model kits'.....?
Posted by Aurora-7 on Saturday, November 8, 2003 7:08 AM
Is there an accurate term for doing this hobby?

A couple of years ago when out with some collegues for lunch, we started talking about our interests. One lady in aour group asked me about my interests and I said I like history, travel and I do modeling. Her eye went wide in disbelief and she stammered 'Y-you model? Y-your a male model'?

Everyone who knew me well errupted into laughter (as I did - I'm no Brad Pitt, but hey I'm not Quasimoto either!'. Since then I 'Scale Model'.

I'd have to say I "Build Model Kits" as I do very little scratch building.

Yeah, that's what I'd say in English, too. "I build models."

In Japanese, I'd say "puramo wo tsukurimasu" (I build plastic models) or "mokei wo tsukurimasu" (I build models), or just "mokei zukuri" (model-making) if asked what my hobby is.
None of these phrases, by the way, would be mistaken for the other type of modeling!

I would say "I build models" but if I did say I did modeling, well , I would probably let them think I was a male model. Of course, I would probably cause a lot of mags to go out of business if I ever did model. LOL

I usually say "I build models" , but sometimes I have to explain that I build "scale models" and not model homes. Some people thought I build mannequin models?!?!?!

I guess I do both,When building my fire engines I find myself so in depth,I,m looking up info on the net,or in trade mags. All my sons say I,m going to go blind if I continue to small fine detail work,of course I tell them I'm blind already,48 years old with bi focals, and 1000x magnifier around my neck,is it crazy,is it a hobby, what is it?...
Its the the idea, when completed you can honestly say you did it with your two hands.
People ask me why I do it,I tell them its my way of expressing myself,my wife calls it art in miniture form..Well enough about it,wether its scale or box once you have laid down that first coat of paint and glued the first part ,Your not a builder anymore your an artist....

I've done both, so any of the terms would be accurate. If people ask, I just say that I'm a modeler, and let them draw their own conclusions.

"I build models". "Of what?" "Planes, ships, military subjects. I also paint miniatures" "Oh, how cute". "Babe, I've probably sunk enough money into my hobby after all these years to buy a Porsche".

I'm a model builder, but I don't generally talk to non-modeler about my hobby. They just don't get it and that's fine with me.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I think I build scale models - most of them on contract basis for others, though.
But more accurately, many of the models I build for myself could be classed as "scale replicas" cuz I have that obsessive compulsive disorder that requires massive amounts of scratchbuilding and superdetailing on almost every subject I build. OOB?
Gasp - shock, horror! For some silly reason, I just have to "improve" anything I think looks "poxy" or just not right.
Subsequently, I don't finish many of the bloody things very quickly.
My clients understand - and they've never complained about the time it takes to build them - they're always happy with the finished product.

I take Woody's stance.

I don't bother explaining to people what I do in my spare time.

If I ever mention model making, I always seem to get the 'Oh Airfix kits' response, with the accompanying smirk.

So I don't bother.

I say I build models. I have a dear friend who used to say she was into modeling. She is 5 foot zero so people asked her how she modeled and she would say she was a 7/8 scale model of Cindy Crawford and enjoy the looks that induced. Now she says she builds models which a lot of people think is very unusual for women as if it was some kind of gender crossing thing.Whistling [:-^]

Everyone at my job knows that I build models, that I'm a military history buff, and that I'm absolutely nuts over aircraft (although I do like armour and ships). The reason they know this is that I'm always putting up screensavers of my builds. I'd describe myself as just a fair modeler, who builds mostly to please myself. I'm on a long learning curve, having come back to the hobby VERY SERIOUSLY five years ago. But I don't discuss my hobby to non-modelers because I usually get only yawns. But to the rest of us I say...... build, build, and never stop!

All the best,

I have experienced that 'raised eyebrow look' before when I said I'm into modeling. Now, I'm more specific. I'm a scale aircraft modeler.

I build model kits. I am a spontaneous model builder. I go to the local hobby shop and look at the inventory and if I see a subject that I have either seem in FSM or just want to build I will but it and build the kit. Does not matter as to scale.

It has been my experience that building aircraft seems to have a bit more prestige than building armor (I build mostly armor these days). I suppose there's a bit more "glamour" associated with aviation.

Even my girlfriend seems to swing that way. She oftens laments the increase in armor around the house, asking things like "why don't you build more planes?" or "don't you think planes are more graceful than these steel turtles?" Oh, well...Ashamed [*^_^*]

Oh yeah, I like turtles, too!Big Smile [:D]
