Spare parts box

What do you guys use for a spare parts box?

A big matchbox.
No, seriously, most of the time, I model in 1/144 scale, so everything fits in the matchbox!(The box is about 3 inches long and two inches wide and an inch tall.) That and, usually the only thing left over after I'm done with a model is the landing gear(I always do gears-up), everything else manages to find it's way onto some model or another!

I have a box that is about 18inches on each side full of general plastic stuff, a classic airframes box full of odd resin, a verlinden box full of odd PE and a gallon ziplock bag for spare decals. Also have a seperate box for 1/48 and 1/72 figures.

I use an old toolbox and have an old steel 4-drawer case that I got from the library to keep decals, and bigger parts in, as well as some of my tools and other modeling odds-and-ends.

Oh yeah, I occasionally just leave them scattered across my desk too! They are easier to find that way! Big Smile [:D]

I've got 4 fishing tackle boxes - they're great. They have little compartments, bigger compartments and movable inserts.
They're cheap, too.

Most of my spare parts are split up into old model boxes, all the small loose parts that get lost at the bottom of the box are in little plastic box the kind with all the dividers, all my resin is in a cardboard box, PE in a wooden cigar box, decals in a zip loc bag, and all my old instruction sheets are in another old model box.

For the leftover general parts, I use a Rubbermaid bin. For specific parts, like aircrew figures, bombs,rockets, etc, I use a hardware storage box with 48 small drawers, so I can sort ordnance, drop tanks, etc by type and scale.

Everything is in ziplocks depending on what it is and all piled in a kit box.

I also use old model boxes but looking for something better. I thought about a parts bin, the kind you can purchase at the hardware store. Maybe a small one 12 to 16 drawers. That would store small the parts. larger parts i'm still looking. Smile [:)]

I have several clear compartmented craft boxes, available at Michael's, Wally-World,
or AC Moore. One box for each size scale I work in.

All my spare parts stay in the box they came in, since I dont get rid of the boxes. I dont have many so its easy to find them.

I use the boxes that checks are mailed out in...great size. also, I use metal cookie tins...I know that sounds wierd, but I have some that are square, and stack right up on each other.

btw paulnchamp....I had NO idea there was a real Wally World!! For Sooth!! I have dreamed of taking the family truckster there all my life. Long live National Lampoons Family Vacation Big Smile [:D]

I use a variety of things for storing spare parts and modeling tools and supplies....a few of my favorites are Sterilite containers of various sizes readily available from any Wally World....The 4qt size being perfect for several things including putting that freshly painted car body in to keep dust off of it and allow for proper curing! I also have a ton of Shimano Clear tackle trays which feature a drop proof hinged lid(meaning when you drop the thing the lid wont come open and parts go everywhere!) they also have adjustable seperators that work better than PLANO IMHO.....I have a Sterilit 3 drawer organizer I bought from wally world....love it too! and of course for some things I just toss in a ziploc or an old kit box!

The Shimano boxes cost a lil bit more than the Plano ones do retail....but they are worth it....

I have used old boxes, but my kids get to them. Right now I'm using a plastic rubbernmaid rollaway 3 drawer set. I used ziplock bags for decals (with thrown away silica gel) and small boxes for parts. That way I can move around the stuff without a mess or my wife getiing bothered for the mess when I finish modeliing for the day!

I totally agree. I just keep them in the original box, or sweep them all "lovingly" into a drawer at my desk. I don't scratchbuild much so i don't realy need them. jeez, it's such a mess now that i hope that nothing else has taken residence in that drawer...

I use the Maxam soap box (it's a bath soap from China containing three cakes in a box). It's the ones I found handy at that time and would you believe they are still around.

I put all unused peices in a "unmarked" zip lock, the unused decals in a larger one with the others from past kis, and throw the instrictions into a cupboard never to be seen again. I generally turf the box unless I or my wife has an immediate use for it, however after going thru EBAY and seeing what people are asking for empty model boxes I may have to rethink that one...

Small parts go into a compartmentalized plastic container I picked up at a discount store; large parts go into something like an oversized shoebox.
