MPC 1/4225 scale USS Cygnus

Mike Walston
Bradenton, Florida

“The (1979) Disney movie ‘The Black Hole’ was pretty forgettable, but the ship model that starred in it was a real gem. It was highly detailed and spectacularly lit,” Mike says. He modified MPC’s 1/4225 scale USS Cygnus by cutting out sections of the ship and replacing them with 1/32"-thick plastic pieces he designed in CorelDraw, backlighting those places with 18 amber LEDs. He added six more LEDs to the forward observation domes and control tower on the back; the engines have four blue LEDs. Engraved black and chrome gold aluminum plates detail other areas of the exterior. Mike painted with flat gray and various shades of gloss yellow and bauhaus gold, and filled in unlit portions with flat black.

brillant piece of work mike i could never get my head round how people get lights to work on plastic models which would have made my airfix hms victory 1/100 a much better piece

That is just an awesome job! You should consider submitting an article on the build to FSM.

Wow, and wow. Excellent visualization. As a side note, I heard Disney is thinking about remaking this movie!

"Fascinating!" That's The Biggest Spaceship THE BLACK HOLE I Seen Closer To About 16 Feet In Length And About 10 Feet In Height. If Only Mike Have A Special Effects Person He Could Create An Abandon Small Moon With An Asteroid And A Large Black Hole On The Foreground.

What an incredible build. Thank you for sharing.

Wow...incredible build! How do we use the stars to rate the build? I can't seem to figure it out.

not a big fan of spacecraft but that looks amazing

Really fine work. The L.E.D.s go beautifully with the paint job.

Wow. You're right: the movie was only fair, but the USS Cygnus was quite an impressive vessel. I never even knew anyone made a kit of it until now. Inspired by your build, I must now find one. Thanks. ;)

The original base kit is such a dog. Thus knowing what you had to start with, it is a fabulous job! My copy of that kit never got finished it was so bad. It slowly piece by piece found it's way to the dump. Kudos and high praise to a fine job!

I guess the movie's worth is a matter of opinion. I happen to love the film and always have ever since seeing it in the theater in 1979.

    Great looking model!!

Great model. I have a soft spot for the movie - though I can't defend much about it other than the visual effects and production design. I loved the Cygnus - such a unique take on spacecraft design, especially considering the time the film was made when everything had the same look. Very nice model...I struggled with the MPC kit - not only should it have been molded in clear plastic, but I think the dimensions are wrong aren't they? It looked stubby vs elegant.
